    When were compensated bridges first introduced? Guitars were not in tune before that?

    That's why a straight wooden saddle works in most cases. Given the proper string gauges, the compensation should be mostly straight. It's possible to need more of a stagger if the gauges are very different than usual, but for most sets it should be relatively straight. But it's not a law...

    the higher the guage you go
    the more straight line the bridge becomes ….
