I just put an offer in for a T style guitar. It's been many years since I have owned a solid body guitar.

For those that use the TI JS112 (12 - 50) Jazz Swing set on your hollow body archtop guitars, do you go lighter on your solid body guitars? I suspect the guitar will arrive with 10s on it. Perhaps the TI JS111 (11 - 47) set would be a better choice for a T style guitar?

It depends on your intended use. I’ve always had at least one solid body that I could grab for any gig - jazz, blues, commercial, pop, etc - to which I didn’t want to take an archtop. They all carry flats, and I was a Chromes guy for decades until I discovered how good TIs are. I use the light Chrome sets (12 - 52) on solid bodies but switch to 10 or 11 (depending on which I had more of) & 13 up top when it’s time. I change E1 & B every month to 6 weeks when playing a lot of blues, to minimize the risk of a broken string on stage.

I switched to TI JS about 4 years ago and have 113s on all my archtops with 13 & 17 plain steel. I tried 112s on my current T and think the higher tension of the Chrome 12-50 plays better with the setup I prefer on my T (which has very low action). If I were only playing jazz on my T, I’d use the 13-56 medium Chrome sets.

My offer was accepted. I have a white one with rosewood fret board coming.

I have Chrome 12-52 with a plain 3rd on my strat. I like the sound and feel but it certainly takes away some of the straty-ness of the guitar. There's no way I'm gonna be bending strings on it haha.

I use flats on my archtop (currently TI Jazz Swing 13's), and D'Addario XL110 10-46 rounds on my semi-hollow and my strat. I play blues/rock stuff on those guitars as well as jazz, and I use the lighter strings so that I can bend strings more easily (not because I think lighter strings go better with solid-body guitars).

I've used both 12-50 TI flats and rounds on my stock Baja Tele. Both sound and feel good.

I've tried 11-47 TI rounds too; they also sound good, but I preferred the 12's for the tone and feel (I rarely need to bend).

My Tele (and I think many teles) quite like a thicker top E and B string, but as nevershouldhavesoldit says, you might prefer the feel and sound of 11's depending on what you play.

Congrats on your new guitar - looks a like a real beauty. You can't go wrong with TIs in my book. Elixir polywebs are also worth a try.

I suggest you enjoy your new guitar and experiment over the coming months to find the strings that suit you both the best.

    Best wishes, Si

I have used JS111 on my Tele for a long time. Don’t forget that the scale is 25.5 so if you have 12s on your Gibson scale archtop, you may prefer a lighter gauge on the Tele.

I usually do about a gauge lower in 25.5 guitars compared to 24.75. But that is mostly for rounds. I did use TI 12s in a Tele which is what I usually do in 24.75 and thought it was fine.

I've got TI 12 flats in my Tele ....
    They work great

    I might change the B to a 15
to get slightly a easier bend on it ....

The guitar arrived today. I was happy playing with it for a few hours until I took a good look at the alignment of the fret board, 6th and 1st string, bridge saddles, and the string through body holes. There was lateral play in the bridge saddles and I was able to get strings in a reasonable place when referenced to the edge of the fret board. However the saddles do look noticeable angled, with the string coming up from the body hole right up against one interior edge of the saddle.

I am disappointed as I often hear good things about the brand. I see a lot of on line photos of these guitars where the 6th string is really drifting toward the edge of the fret board. (Not nearly as good as I see on the manufacturer's catalogue page)

Alignment issues are just par for the course with T style, string through the body, bolt on neck guitars?

…not on the ones I’ve had.

Can’t speak for Reverends. On my G&L Tele, I had to adjust the bridge saddle for E6 quite a bit to make the string align with the fretboard and the pole piece. However, once I had that set up I never had any issues, like strings breaking. Nowadays I play with an ashtray bridge cover so you can’t even see it.

Funny, though, I never noticed that when playing the guitar in the shop.

yeah me too , so far I’m loving the
new (to me) tele , not as warm as an archtop but such a pretty singing voice for melodies ….

I’m having to do fair bit of tweaking to get it how i want it (ongoing) but I guess we all do that and it’s just part of the process ….

Intonation depends very much on the strings being used. If you change strings, you will probably need to adjust the intonation. That particular pattern isn't quite the usual, but if it's TI strings it's not out of the question. TI strings have different diameters and tensions than most other strings, so intonation settings are generally different. You do need a good strobe tuner to check and set the intonation. A regular Snark-like tuner isn't precise enough.

I have TI 12's on my Telecaster and it plays great and sounds great. I have used them on one of my Strats and on one of my Les Pauls as well. TI 12's on a quality solid body guitar played through a good "jazz" amplifier gives a great jazz guitar sound. The one thing they do not do well is traditional rhythm guitar. Solid body guitars have no acoustic "crunch".

Have you considered giving the neck a little tap on the treble side to nudge it into a more centered position?

I did manage to improve things this morning by loosening the six bolt on neck screws, pushing the neck near the head towards the treble side and re-tightening the screws. After doing that I was able to put the saddles back in a normal alignment.

I did find adjusting the bolt on neck without help to be awkward. Although it was easy to push the neck to a proper position, I found it difficult to hold that position while tightening the screws. It seems it's a task where help is best if one does not have proper jig to hold the guitar.

Several years ago I attended a guitar show where DR was handing out free packages of Pure Blues 11-50 nickel round core strings. I put them on the guitar yesterday morning and went to outdoor open mic yesterday. Thought those worked well on the guitar. I played through a Henriksen Bud 6 amp. Although that did not give a traditional Fender guitar and amp sound, I certainly found it to be enjoyable. I like being able to play a chord and have it clearly sustain for a full measure or more.

On the last tune I played I must have gotten a little aggressive with the right hand and managed to inadvertently switch to the bridge pickup and roll the volume knob.

Just updating the thread to report what seems to be working for me......

I am using the JS111 set now on the Telecaster style guitar and the JS112 set on my archtop guitars. I found the JS112 set felt rather stiff to me on the Telecaster style guitar.
