The guitar sounds nice, although anything that Tim Lerch plays would sound nice to me.

To my very pedestrian ears this has a "tele"-type sound and from what I know about Tim Lerch, I believe he is a tele fan so not surprised that he would like this guitar.

Not something I’d buy, but a very interesting design. Somehow it seems to fit JL really well, both defy categorisation. Although he seems to have gone mostly back to Teles.

Great playing, great guitar for sure
But I find it hard to justify a price over 2000 bucks for a solid body.
That's just my opinion.. I understand some like to purchase a Custom Shop Fender or a billion bucks vintage..
But give Tim a good American Pro 2 Telecaster, close your eyes.. And just listen the player

It's fully hollow, with a large trestle "block" down the center... seems to be something in-between a 335 (solid center block) and some Gretsch models (trestle bracing).

But yes- not being a professional musician, I can't justify the price either. I'd love to have one, I think it sounds unique and incredible. And I love Bigsbys...

I think Collings marketing philosophy has always been to not worry about the many who can't justify the expense of their instruments and just trust that if they limit their output and build them really well, there will always be a large enough market for them to support their sales despite very high prices. They make lovely guitars. They price them at the far right end of the demand curve and they make just enough of them to fulfill that demand. By definition, I'm not one of their customers but I have great respect for them and I have always enjoyed myself when I've had the opportunity to play their guitars.

That's how boutique marketing operates. This is not an everyman's guitar, neither is Trenier or Campellone or Slaman, etc. Or Gibson, for that matter.

Not that it makes much difference. I think Tim could play a toothbrush and sound better than me.

Probably true about Tim for most of us but Tim has shown a really strong taste for while now for pickups that are tonally in the Dynasonic family so it's not a surprise that he'd like the Collings JL.

Sorry didn't know this model was a hollow design. That changes things regarding the price
Don't mistake my thoughts, I highly respect the high end builders.
I've just purchased a used American Vintage 59 Stratocaster (1950€), and it's so awesome, I wonder how a solid body could be even better than that ? Well it's a very simple no frills guitar.. So I suppose that every bling element you can add will be impacted in the price.
