GC has the Jazz 12 for $260. Same electronics as the LJ, 12 inch speaker.

The head with the same power and a few extra controls is $349.
A head with the same power and the same controls (raw dog 60) is $399.

It's like they're selling it cheaper with the speaker.

    Am I missing something?

And, can anybody give me an idea of how much louder the 12 is compared to the LJ? I know that's an imprecise question ... but I've got some gigs which the LJ is not quite cutting, volume wise, and I'm trying to figure out whether the 12 will be significantly better.

I have a 12 in the backline at my regular club gig, and I had a LJ for about 2 years. The 12 is audibly louder at the same volume settings, which is probably a combination of about 3 dB more across the full frequency spectrum from the speaker itself and the bigger bottom from the larger driver / cabinet combination. It's enough to feel different, but it's not like the difference between a Princeton and a Twin (or even a Vibrolux). The 12 does sound and feel "bigger", but I never felt that the LJ was much behind it - and I play 7s.

I've never tried an RD60, but it's a totally different amp from the LJ and Jazz 12. I'm pretty sure it has a tube in the front end like my EG250, and that front end sounds amazingly warm and full. But a new Jazz 12 for $260 is a steal! And they also have the LJ on sale for $200, which is grand larceny.

What's the catch here?Is there a newer model coming out and they are unloading these.I had brought this up in another post but the pictures of the back show the fan which had a noise problem. Can anyone confirm this is the newer version with the fan noise problem fixed?

Sellers don't bother about whether stock photos are current. They just put up whatever photo is easily available. It has nothing to do with the actual model being currently sold. The first edition, with the fan partially outside, hasn't been manufactured in a very long time, and not a huge number were even produced, AFAIK. Anything currently being sold as new will be the newer model. That said, I have no idea whether a new model is in the offing. It might just be that DV didn't sell enough, and is trying to get rid of excess stock on hand. That isn't a rare occurrence. But I have zero actual knowledge.

Here's a little too much detail, but maybe something will emerge.

I'd been using the LJ for most things. I generally turned the bass all the way, or most of the way, down while leaving the amp flat on the floor. The resulting sound was more than good enough for single note lines -- I liked it for that. But, chords had a tendency to sound harsh.

So, I tried a few other things. My pedalboard (ME80) right into a Mackie SRM 350 powered speaker. Which worked, but I had to be really careful eq'ing the bass frequencies because they had a tendency to get loud and boomy if I turned the SRM 350 up.

Then I tried ME80 --> LJ --> Yamaha mixer --> SRM350. (The mixer was to accommodate a mic for announcements). That seems to work fine. I get increased richness (for want of a way to describe it) and it doesn't sound harsh. And, I have a couple of outdoor gigs in larger venues than usual coming up, so I like having the extra volume available.

So, the question I'm wondering about is, should I pounce on this deal for the Jazz 12?

The answer, of course, is to buy it with a return privilege and try it, but there are some very knowledgable people on this forum, so I thought I'd ask.

New topic: I understand the concern about the fan noise, but it has been quite a few years since they changed it. Could these be old stock with fan noise? I guess so, but I'd be willing to take a chance -- with a return privilege. I think it's probably the new model. The prices on these have varied pretty wildly, although I think this is a new low.

I bought my LJ new from MF about 3 years ago and it was the later model. So is the 12 at the club, and it was bought even earlier. So I strongly doubt that MF/GC still has the old version in stock. And I’ve never even heard the fan on either of mine.

I bought mine about 6 or 7 years ago, IIRC, and it's the newer model. I never hear the fan at bedroom levels. I do tend to crank the amp up to about 50% volume even there, and turn the guitar volume way down, for tone, but I don't recall ever hearing the fan. In a loud gigging situation it may be worked hard enough to bring on the fan, but I wouldn't hear it there even if it were fairly loud.

Mine is two and a half years old. I've never heard the fan.

You could convince me it doesn't have one.

$200 for the LJ! I was thinking about selling mine to partially finance a used Vintage 47 VA-185G. But what's the point except to free up a little bit of space. Oh, well! My timing on buying and selling is impeccable!

I just ordered the Jazz 12 at $260.

GC gives a 45 day return privilege. I ordered it on-line but I can return it to the local GC.

Basic idea is to get a little more volume, but, mostly, to get a richer sound on chords.
I ended up thinking that the LJ can't quite do it and that maybe the larger speaker would help.

Supporting this notion was hooking up the ME80 into the LJ (speaker off) into a mixer and then into a powered speaker. The LJ's electronics sounded fine (since I was basically using it as a preamp). The mixer didn't matter much, although I did use some EQ. And the powered speaker has 165 watts LF and 30 watts HF into a 10 inch speaker.

Too much detail. The take-away was that more power and a larger speaker might do the trick. The Jazz 12 doesn't actually have more power, but it seems to be more efficient -- meaning, louder for the same power because of the speaker and cabinet.

The Jazz 12 is about 22.5 lbs, so it's not really all that lightweight. There are some other options in the general weight class, but $260 was difficult to resist when MF has it at $499.

I might also mention that GC has been good about returns. I recall one item that took longer in the store to buy than it took to return for full refund.

Here's hoping the amp doesn't suck, for both our sakes!

That's about the only good thing about Guitar Center is that you have 45 days to return it if you don't like it..There's a GC about 20 minutes from my house so it's easy for me just to bring it back there without the pain of having to ship it.

They honored the return policy and they were cheerful about it the two times I returned something.

They'll also match any legit price.

If they have the item I want, I'm happy to buy it there.
