This is what I have been packing when we go on a vacation involving a flight.

It's definitely not the sound of my archtops, but it does sound OK. I use the same Martin Monels as on my "real" guitars.

Man, I just fish on vacation. When I come back a lot of the stuff I was struggling with makes sense.

    I can dig that.
Fishing trips can be hard on archtops too. I take a Composite Acoustics (now defunct) carbon fiber archtop that tolerates extreme conditions of heat and humidity. I always joke that if I loose a canoe paddle, I can use the guitar. The focus is definitely on the fish.

With little kids, vacation isn’t really a break for me. It’s just parenting on hard mode.

My vacation rig-Eastman Pisano 880, Fender Champion 20. Seat by Beer cooler. Actually picked up some paying gigs just sitting around practicing before fishing.

Do you fly with the Eastman Pisano and the amp?

My vacation rig is to leave the guitar at home and do something else for a while. YMMV.

I can play pretty fast if the song calls for it LOL

I have flown several times with the Pisano, I bought it new in 2007. It's a 2005 build date. It was supplied with a fiberglass type case that's fairly stout, although I never did send it through baggage. Just carried it on and asked if there was was any room in the crew closet. Worked every time.
No need to travel with the amp there has been one provided at the gig however I do have a little headphone amp.

You are a brave man! I have never been brave enough to try to get a real guitar on a plane. What would you do if they said no? I had an issue once getting my travel guitar on. I had to really work hard to convince the flight attendant that it would fit and that it wouldn't prevent others from fitting their baggage in the overhead. She said if there was a lot of baggage my guitar would have to go in the hold.

There's some truth to just "walking away" for a bit.

I didn't fly at all during the pandemic. Out of maybe 20 pre-pandemic flights (07-2019 or so) I did have to gate check the Pisano three times. There was no point in arguing with the flight attendant, so I just hung out in the skyway and loosened the strings a bit. I made nice nice to the baggage person about not putting anything heavy on it, they understood. When I arrived at the destination I didn't open the case for a while and waited to retune. No damage or finish checking. Guitars are pretty tough, although I wouldn't fly with my Benedetto Cremona unless I bought a seat for it!

I once flew from NYC to Vegas with a 1946 Martin 00028. I had lengthy discussion about it and ended up buying a ticket for it. Even then ('80's) it was valuable.

I got on the plane and there were like 20 people on it. I was livid.

I actually think that they refunded me the ticket. IIRC.

Here’s my rig—VoyageAir OM guitar. Took a similar guitar to Jamaica and to Hawaii.

For Jamaica the guitar case was my ONLY luggage. I put all my clothes in there, and even stuffed the sound hole with socks and underwear. On a small plane I was able to put it under the seat without suffering too much lack of room.

Great sound, and as good as any solid-top flattop guitar for <$1000. (The tuner broke so I did upgrade them.) It has a mellow tone I would describe as Taylor-esque, not like a Martin.

My current guitar has a solid top. I have a sound hole DM pickup for it, which I’ve not used yet, but I could plug it in and play amplified it I wanted to.

VA also makes a nice-looking Tele-style guitar with a folding neck, if you really need an electric.

Those Voyage Airs are cool. I always thought someone like Rainsong should make a carbon fiber version of that- totally impervious to various humidity levels, and tough as nails.

    Hey... someone does...
