I love the clean jazz tone on the helix. Using the deluxe reverb or dumble amps, it's killer. Reverbs are good too.

What is disappointing is the inability to get a cranked deluxe reverb that is slightly overdriven ala larry carlton.

    Not even with a Zendrive?

Is the Helix 100% clean with a PAF?

    Thanks!

I missed this question. Yes, I can back the gain down to 2 or 3 and it's clean with a PAF. Surprisingly, the ceramic pickups in my GB10 can still overpower it at that setting. So I have to back it down even more for it to be clean with the GB10. Which then means that when I want a slight overdrive tone, with any other pickup , it sounds anemic. I think i'd really have to create duplicate presets with different gain levels for each guitar or be willing to adjust it by hand. If it was a dedicated analog knob on the front - no problem but I hate kneeling down on the floor and scrolling through menus. I've gotten pretty good at it but you also have to be careful because it's easy to accidentally hit another button and get it into an funky state!

I vacillate between the litigator (dumble) and deluxe reverb vib channel for jazz guitar. The deluxe has that bright attack from the .050pf bright cap. Sounds great for benson/wes stuff. The litigator is a little darker and smokier. The litigator amp also pushes much better into overdrive. I can have it really clean and then hit it with my gladio, kingtone soloist or kingtone fuzz with a strat or 335 or 175 and it sounds really great. The 50pf bright cap sounds a little fizzy for gain. I don't know if they modeled it right. In a real fender, as the gain increases, the amount of signal bypassing through the cap also decreases. Not sure if the helix does that. However, helix also has a normal channel deluxe reverb amp. I just haven't used it.

I've tried to only use a few different amps because there are just too many options.

Too bad about the Zendrive, maybe there's more options? I don't know enough about that type of sound.

Great video by Cordy, he's one of the foew YouTubers I enjoy.

Great, that's really good to know about the Helix. If you got one, it would probably be the LT so the screens / menu become easier to dial - the HX Stomp is very small and light, but editing without a PC should be a proper nightmare.

You should probably replace those ceramics with some nice PAFs

I'd love to replace the pickups but it's not cheap. The stock pickups are dimarzios. Assuming duncans or gibson would fit in the covers, I could buy a set for $250-$300, pay my luthier to replace the covers and mount them in the existing covers that have brackets welded to them on the GB10. Last time I asked him about it, he wanted $150. So that makes it $500 with tax to swap them out. If it wasn't for the bracket mounting, I'd probably try to do it myself although I hate doing that in an archtop...

One warning about the LT is that it is *HUGE* and VERY HEAVY. It takes up a lot of floor space and is very inconvenient to use for recording because of that. I like that the stomp can sit on my pedalboard or on my desktop. Also, the difference in horsepower is minimal. You can do more blocks on the LT but if you want to do something like add a synth block to an already existing preset with 5 or 6 blocks, the synth block is too much for it. I ended up selling the LT and just sticking with the stomp.

I must be the odd duck here, but I love the Clean tone I get with my Quilters. Almost like an old Silver Faced Twin with JBLs but a bit more elastic for lack of of a better term.

It definitely is in the the Clean Fender camp with a lot of headroom available. If the SRV slightly overdriven tone is your thing, try adding a Tube Screamer or similar set to less overdrive.

For the record I’ve owned a couple of late 70’s Dumble OD Specials, as well as the Ceriatone clone. Lovely amps, but heavy to haul around at my age!

I just did an experiment with my EJ Strat going into the 202 with pedals. And I'm going to have to say you are right. The difference is that previously I had the master up and the gain way down. Turning the Gain up to 5 makes a huge difference for rock and fusion tone.

    I STAND CORRECTED.

Jack, I did a little more digging and with the HX Stomp XL you can actually edit things with your foot (or an expression pedal). It's called "Edit Pedal Mode" and it seems a lot easier than bending down (around 10:40). It's still small and light!

They just released some dual pedals that have reverb and delay

it's too large for me. I use the Stomp on my pedalboard.

Could you confirm that Dream 65, with the gain at zero, stays 100% clean with a PAF? I've heard conflicting reports. Many thanks!

Rich Severson gets great classic jazz sounds out of the quilters I've seen him use on his YouTubes. I watched them all when I was first thinking of getting one. I do remember a vid where he's twiddling knobs to show what the amp can do, goes back towards his sound, and then he says "I'll turn the gain up a bit. Helps fatten the sound." He was playing an L5 or something like that. Not dirty, but maybe not 100% clean either.
