‘‘Twas the night before Christmas and Tal through the house, not a creature Wes stirring, not even a mouse…”
i wish you all a merry and blessed Christmas. And the happiest of new years! It’s fun to participate in great discussions about jazz guitars, music, and equipment with all of you! I have learned much and hope I have contributed much. Here’s to many more great discussions in 2023!

I grew up celebrating Christmas and believing in Santa Claus.
More recently my kids and I have celebrated Hanukkah, though now in my “mixed” household we celebrate Hanukkah AND Christmas. The best of both worlds I guess.
I still consider it a special time. Hanukkah is about lighting the way for the world, and Christmas is about renewal, and there is always something we can take from the season. If nothing else, think less of ourselves and more about others.
We watched the movie It Happened on 5th Avenue last night. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a 1940’s movie that takes place around Christmas time. The wealthy homeowner whose house is invaded by colorful “squatters” is a classic Scrooge character who has to learn a bit about charity and thoughtfulness.
It’s not a great movie, but if you like It’s a Wonderful Life, you’ll like this one.

As COVID starts a fast climb again here in NoVa, this I thought was worth a share:
“We have more ways than ever to communicate, except the tangible ones that actually matter. We may have moved on from old-fashioned firesides and pan-generational environments, banquets and carol services, midnight masses and midnight toasts, for the sophistication of empty rooms filled with nothing but technological phantoms.”
“The beauty and grace of Christmas comes because it is a temporary reprieve from hardship and the rebirth of hope in the depths of winter. It is an island, full of lights, cheer, charity and togetherness, in a sea of darkness. Or, at least, it could be. The more we forget this as an individual or a society, the more we risk finding ourselves out there in the dark, shut off from the world, like ghosts of what we could have been.”
