The picture reminded me of Vishwa Mohan Bhatt:

I am no expert but that looks like a Mohan veena, an instrument created by Mohan Bhatt from a guitar adapting it to Indian music and played lap style with a slide. It has become that standard form of the guitar in Indian classical music. Bhatt and Ry Cooder recorded a Grammy-winning album on Mohan veena and American slide guitar- improvising it in its entirety having first met less than an hour before!
