Not really "vs", but an interesting short discussion on the subject, on telecasters. The only time I've ever tried flats was on a big hollowbody (Epi Broadway) and they were far too dark/mellow for that guitar. I've never tried them again, but after watching this, it might be interesting to put them on a tele... hmm...

    Tim's tones are always superb...

That’s funny I just went back to flats on my Broadway trying to get more mellow and dark.

Not a huge fan of flats on Teles, but he makes every guitar sound great.

Tim can play nice sound but less than my personal likes. I can tell it is a Tele and sound just not as full for jazz.

I like both roundwounds and flats so don't choose 1 over the other. I like the bright zing of roundwounds and the dull cluck of flats.

I use TI flats on three archtops (Sadowsky JH, L7, 575). Love them.

But they just didn't work for me on a tele, much to my surprise.

I wonder what Ed Bickert or Ted Greene used...

Been thinking about this, because I love my TI flats on my archtops, but hate to cut larger nut slots on a perfectly good Tele, only to find out I don't like it.... spendy experiment. Maybe one day.

Here's the link to the "Gear" page at TedGreene.com. At the very bottom of the page is a pdf that discusses Ted's use of various string gauges.

I like me my Pyramid Fusion Flats on my Tele - but then, they are not perfectly flat. Not like TIs.

Exactly, put flats on it like they used to come standard.

Ed Bickert used 10-48 (or maybe 46) Ernie Ball roundwounds.

I love flats on a Tele, even for twangier sounds.

I like the sound of flats but can’t handle the transition to the plain B and E. Tim Lerch deals with that by putting a plain G on. Seems to work. Coincidentally, I put new TI’s on my guitar the other day only to find out that I’d ordered the wrong pack, with a plain G. Put them on anyway, sounds awesome.
