This is my new cazpar bass. I'm switching over to it from my JCR because the JCR's 33" scale is just too big. I'd kind of like to have a true baritone guitar tuned to A but i'm digging this instrument...

I've also pretty much switched to fingerstyle full time. Haven't used a pick except for some videos I recorded for about a year. My chops with fingers are comparable to what I was able to do with the pick previously. Rhythmically more accurate, raw speed a little better with the pick. Still struggling with certain aspects but in other regards (arpeggios, etc) the fingers are inherently superior...

Thanks. I think my other 6 string bass actually sounds better but the scale length is too long for me to play complex chords...

Sounds good Jack. I like the finger style playing a lot. I'd love to hear you on something a little shorter going A to A. I think it would give it a little more clarity but I have no idea where you'd find one without having it made.

Thanks Jim. Emerald makes an A-A baritone. I was thinking of trying to find one of yours. I kind of wonder if I could find a set of strings to do that with at 30" on this instrument...

Wow Jack! That’s crazy. I cant believe you just picked up a bass and started playing it like that.
    You are one talented dude.
    Nice!

I recently bought an inexpensive Fender Bass VI, really digging it. Not like a 6-string bass, more like a longer scale guitar 8va down. I recently used it for the bass part for a production of "Guys and Dolls." The director (center) and the entire orchestra preferred its clarity over the traditional orchestral upright.

Thanks for the kind words Joe. I've actually been playing bass almost exclusively since my pops died in 2021. It's been about 20 months now. The only time I have even used a pick is when recording some videos. Lately I have started playing guitar again some more and I'm playing fingerstyle on guitar too. Wish I had done this 20 years ago, lol...

    You are very welcome Jack.
I didnt want to mention it because I didnt want to drum up any sadness but I ABSOLUTELY noticed, you look a lot happier. You played most of the videos with a smile on your face. Very calm, very relaxed and you look happy. I know the pain will never completely go away, but I am glad you are finding some peace. And you look fit as a fiddle bud. Very cool.
Thanks for sharing your overwhelming talent with us.

Thanks my friend. I am finding some peace. It is hard but I feel like my dad is with me all the time, especially when I am playing guitar or bass. I hope he's looking down at me and knows how much he inspired me.

What is the scale? What strings do you use? The strings that came with the guitar were horribly unbalanced. I put these on and it's much better.

So far, I'm using the strings that came on it which were a custom set of nickel plated rounds from stringjoy.

    .100 .080 .060 .050 .040 .030

    I feel like the bottom G B E strings are a tad too heavy but on my 33" JCR I was using .100 .080 .065 .045 .032 .022

The top 2 strings on that setup feel too light and I get a plinky sound on them. I don't know if .040 and .030 would work at 33" scale. They'd probably break. I decided to sell that instrument anyway because it's just to hard on my left hand...

I'd like to try .045 .035 .026 with the stringjoy when I get around to it...There's a fine line with playing rest strokes with bare fingers though where if it's too light it just sounds awful. I notice with a pick the JCR string set with the .022 sounds fine. Another issue is that the .022 and a .024 I tried for a high E are noticably lower volume unless you use the special alloy strings that GHS makes that are more magnetically active than steel. But they are also brighter!

Glen Campbell on the Bass VI. Plays it like a guitar.

these are the ghs strings that have more magnetic output

    GHS Progressives "Alloy 52" Wound .022, PR22

Note that they are not very long. My high E barely fit on the 33" jcr going through the body.

Even though I am proficient on classical guitar, I find it difficult to play the Bass VI with my fingers, would rather use a pick. On the other hand, on a regular spaced bass, I prefer using my fingers. Strange, I can't explain it. It took some practice to mimic bowing with a pick, by "fluttering" it close to he bridge where the strings are tight.

Yeah, it's a weird phenomenon going back and forth for me. Because I don't use nails, I can't get i/m happening on guitar but because of the heavier strings on bass I'm fairly proficient at it. i find that alternating thumb/index/thumb/middle works on both. Not sure why...

    Hello Jack,

Wow, that’s some killer playing on bass, with a really original right hand technique!

Are you tuning in fourths or guitar tuning? What is your low string? What is the scale length of this instrument?

    Thanks!

Hi Russell, thanks for the comments. I started out the summer trying to learn matt garrison's technique of alternating thumb/index/middle/ring (PIMA) and found that I couldn't do it. It kept sounding like a gallop between the middle and ring finger. So I switched to thumb/index/middle but found that to be awkward for many things. I finally settled on thumb/index/thumb/middle and I think that seems to work well and should keep getting better.

Like the the PIMA, i started out tuning in 4ths B-C and after a month of sounding like a beginner, I retuned it E-E and it's really changed things for me. I miss the low B though...It's a 30" scale.

I have to say though, that I like my JCR 6 string bass better but at 33 and wider fingerboard, it's a wrist killer for playing guitar arrangements.

My entire studio is covered in photos and original art by myself and various artists that I admire. I have paintings and photographs of my dad, john coltrane, charlie parker, pat martino, jaco, hadrien feraud, jimi hendrix.

More photos and paintings of my dad than anyone else. I have 2 large paintings and 2 large photos of him. He's my biggest source of admiration and inspiration. I actually had a large picture of him directly behind where I shoot but I had to move it because my camera tries to do a smart-focus on faces and it kept focusing on the picture in the background when he was back there. I think it was trying to tell me something.
