    Hi everyone,

I have a weird buzz when I hit F notes on my GB10.

While trying to locate the source of the problem, I loosened up the bridge pickup.

    This fell out :
Who knows what this gold piece of metal on the GB10 does?-1a86645f-fc9e-4518-93e7-b42a1b05aa48-jpg

I presume it should be located between the pickguard and the metal bracket for the pickup, but I really don’t know what it is, how important it is, or what it does?

    Does anyone out there know?

There is nothing worse in life then a lazy shim. I have found if you sing a little chim chiminey, chim chiminey, chim chim cher-ee, they will get right back to work.

Perhaps Jimmy will chime in on this, since he seems to have a pretty encyclopedic knowledge of these guitars. My GB10 (1981) doesn't have anything remotely like that anywhere on it. Where did it fall out from?

fell out from between the pickguard and the bracket for the bridge pick up. Can’t see it anywhere on Ibanez parts catalogue either

Haha, no it’s literally driving me insane.

ive stuffed paper down bits of my guitar, loosened up and tightened the truss rod, re strung it, tightened and loosened the tailpiece, and done everything almost to locate it.

Is it all F notes or just one particular place?

I have never owned a gb10 but I would probably remove the pickguard and see what happens

Did you try tightening the pickup adjustment screws a little? I had the mysterious buzz a while ago and it turned out a pickup screw was too loose!

you mean the tiny screws actually in the humbuckers themselves or the the ones in the pickguard? I’ve gone crazy with the pickguard screws and that’s not helped.

    yeah it’s the likely culprit!

I’ve not completely removed it because I’m a little scared of doing it and causing more buzz before a gig I have tomorrow.

maybe ill try that after my gig

[edit now removed and readded and still the rattle is there!]

Now have taken off the pickguard and it still happens.

so it must be tail piece, volume knobs, switch, or something inside.

don’t know how to check knobs though.

Did you check that the wire loom is not buzzing within the cavity of the GB10?

Never heard of a wire loom, but it sounds promising. How could I check this? do I need a camera or any fancy tools?

Volume knobs and the tailpiece look pretty sturdy. Although when I loosen some of the thicker strings, the buzz goes away so it's very odd.

To check the knobs, play an F note, get the buzz, and touch a knob. If the buzz goes away when you touch a knob, that's the culprit. If not, keep searching. I've had a buzz caused by a loose tone control shaft. There are so many possibilities that it's hard to guess what the cause is. There are multiple threads here on the forum discussing this, and you might want to read through them and try the fixes suggested. It can take a long time. The first thing I would do is to make sure it's the guitar that's buzzing, and not the amp, or something else in the room. I've had items hanging on the walls, including pictures and other guitars that were buzzing, when I could have sworn it was coming from the guitar. Try playing in a different location - another room, outside, whatever is available, and see if the buzz is present there. If it is, then you have narrowed it down to something on the guitar. If not, problem solved as far as the guitar is concerned, you just need to find what else is doing it.

sympathetic buzzs can be tough to track down. Some things to check is the wires inside the box as mentioned, the tuners screws and particularly the nuts. If it's many places on the fretboard with one frequency it would definitely be a vibration. Just to rule out though is the action really low?

I wonder if somebody put it in between the mounting tab of the pickup and the pickguard to adjust the angle of the pick up vis-à-vis the strings.

Action is pretty high. I’ll take off the tone knobs. But then after that it may be luthier time.

Thanks for all your answers. I browsed loads of the mysterious rattle threads and each time there are new possibilities and potential sources.

May borrow a stethoscope at this point!

Nut's on the tuners. I've also had the screws in the tailpiece cause problems. Make sure they are good and tight. You will track it down It will be consuming until you do....

I've never tried this, but it seems to me that it might be worth a try.

Take something like a wooden spoon and press the spoon end to your ear. Then press the thin end to various parts of the guitar while the buzz is happening. Maybe it will be loudest near the culprit.

I don't know for sure, but it's free to try.

happy but I know it’ll be back ?
