I'm restringing my new Telecaster for the first time and have a set of D'Addario half rounds on the way.
I remember watching a video (posted on this forum, if I'm not mistaken) on the proper way to install flatwounds, to keep them from unravelling.
I can't find the video, but as I recall, the string is passed through the slot and left a little long (rather than being inserted in the center hole of the tuner), and then locked in with the first wrap on top, and subsequent wraps under.
I'm wondering if the same technique would be recommended for half rounds. They have a hex core, .010 - .046.
Also, would appreciate the link to the video referenced above, if anyone has it.
I wanted to give these a try because of the plain G, and the lower price.
Thanks

Hex core strings you can string as normal. Its the round core that can go sour

I have had no trouble inserting round core strings into the center hole of Kluson style tuners on Telecasters and Stratocasters (or my GB10). I determine the location, bend the string 90° and then trim it, put it into the hole, bend it 90° again against the slot, and then wind it up as per usual. I have never had the windings come loose doing this whether using roundwound or flatwound strings. I haven't tried half-round but I cannot imagine it would be any different. I really like not having the sharp end of the string sticking out to either poke my finger or tear up the inside of my gig bag and have always wondered why every tuner isn't designed this way, since it makes so much sense.
