I have been thinking about a low gain overdrive to stack with my Blue Note in my rock pedal board. Morning Glory is there now but I am afraid it has too much mids.

But that is not the point, point is the surprise I experienced listening Mike Hermans' playing in a Nobels pedal demo. Normally the stomp box demonstrators play "blues" or "rock" or "heavy", but heey, what is this, I know this song from totally different environment! Billie's Bounce! Charlie Parker song!

The arrangement might be thought as a bit controversial, but what the heck if the kids like it!

I agree - that is cool! I have no problem believing that Bird or Dizzy would be writing and playing in the styles and rhythms of today and tomorrow right now. My only beef with playing bebop tunes in modern styles is over those who do it as a gimmick. As a change-up, it entertains - as a theme, it bores.

No, I wouldn’t buy a pedal for it - that great, smooth OD from the amps of the day would be just fine! FWIW, I use a Wampler Tumnus Deluxe for a nice, smooth, controllable Dumbloid OD. With good 3 band EQ plus a “hot” switch, it’s a great and very versatile effect.

    Sounds pretty good!

Might get a bit messy if you want to add complex voicings though.

For me bebop and genres that have lots of musical complexity don't really need timbral variations to keep the listener interested. But I also believe that one should pursue the sound in their head so..

I’ve bought more than one pedal on the basis of a Mike Hermans demo! He’s great.

To me, it sounds terrible. But then I hate distortion of any kind. I just don't understand the attraction. I do not, and will not, own an overdrive pedal. Boost of some sort can be very convenient, for switching from rhythm to solo, as long as there is no distortion when boosted. But I know I'm in a tiny minority.

I do not want to be controversial, and I honestly believe that my (and other) musicians likes and dislikes are truly based on their own path/spirit/voice. In other words, everyone is right even if the statements are mutually exclusive.

(There are a bunch of example of when a group of people thought what an artist was doing was wrong, and later that artist is held up as a visionary, and becomes a corner stone of how the art form is understood).

However in my mind: the trumpet has an incredible ability to move through different timbre and articulations. I also think some of the most complex music utilizes a lot of tone color devices.

To my knowledge there are four elements of physics that we can relate to music: amplitude, duration, pitch, and timbre. I would hate to throw out, one of the basic elements that allow me to shape musical ideas.

However, this is my path, and I have my “rules” to try and fully actualize my understanding of music. I would think, that every one has their own “rules”, for the same reason. In as much, as my understandings and their understandings overlap, is probably a predictor of how much, I am going to find their art (music) meaningful.

(I think it is also important to remember, that everyone likes money, and even those who understand the destruction of greed, would enjoy a little more money. That is not to condone, what greed has done to us all, and the continue pathological worship of money/wealth... as if a person could feel good about themselves based on how much they own or make... sad).

So, is it an octave overdrive, or is the bass just being played uh… how do I put this… wrong.

I'm currently using a Wampler Belle pedal, Wampler's take on the ODR-1. Mostly as a boost/preamp fine-tuner. A Fulltone Full-Drive 2 V2 provides any required degree of toothiness deemed appropriate. All at a reasonable (non-toxic) volume. The '64 Vibroverb and the Luckhurst Princeton Homage barely break a sweat, and the slightly-out-of-sync tremolos give a nice shimmer effect. Stereo delays and reverbs are in the works. I'm good for now.

I have a ton of ODs in my AX8 (or at least I think I do lol) but usually I use a Fuchs Plush drive when I want a little bit of OD. It's not remotely a 'metal' type of OD/distortion, but more of a Fuchs/Dumble kind of tube amp character OD. I do like the sound of this pedal in the demo though, but it doesn't strike me as a subtle OD so much as a 'does everything/replace your current OD' type pedal. One of the other reviews of it I saw called it "the other green OD", so it's meant to play in the tube screamer playground I guess.

If I was still doing 'dad band' type gigs I'd probably pick one of these up

Mostly I think we (or at least I!) use OD Pedals for what they do to the mids (in addition to the hair of course).

ODR type pedals are very different from other OD's, they are pretty flat in the mids. Most others boost the mids, often at different frequencies. I have a King of Tone, a Klon type, and a Fulldrive, all have a slight mid boost, all at different frequencies. So when you get an OD, for whatever reason, it pays to pay attention to whether the mid push is where you want it. Some are placed very nicely for even straight ahead jazz if you dial the gain down to remove the grind. I like the KOT for this. Seems to fill in the low mids a bit, great for a jazz guitar into a mid-light Fender type amp. Julian Lage used a Morning Glory for a long time, I believe for a similar purpose.

ODR's (I had the Nordland, a great pedal) seem flatter, and they are great for a certain kind of OD, mostly believed by Nashville session players. Great for that commercial Telecaster OD on country records, if you know that sound. I find I prefer a bit of a mid push due to the type of amps that I have.

I don't think an ODR would be near my first choice for jazz. Or even fusion. YMMV etc.

What I use for a boost pedal, the few times I use one, is a Boss GE-7. I also have a Joyo American Sound which can do the job, but I'm not a big fan of it. Also a Jr Barnyard, of which I'm even less of a fan. But different strokes, different folks.

I have not found an used ODR in a good price so I ended buying a second hand DOD Looking Glass from a German guy. Waiting it to arrive next week.

Morning Glory is wonderful for low gain, but after all it is a bit middy with my guitars (Les Pauls with P90s and humbuckers). Some time ago I soldered an AION clone of it and it is surprisingly less middy and more open.

Seems like I am in a some kinda rabbit hole…
