I think I need a good portable guitar stand if I'm going to start gigging. It will be used for both an archtop (2 3/4" body depth, 15.75" wide) and also a couple of electrics (roughly strat-like in shape). Obviously I know this is a small question, but I do want my guitars to be safe from damage in use, and there may be other factors to consider. Does anyone have any recommendations? Cheers!

I've got one of these and like it very much:

Hercules Stands GS432B Tri Stand Guitar Stand and more Guitar Stands & Wall Hangers at GuitarCenter.com.

Most days, I've got a strat style, 335 style and either my 17" archtop or my El Rey on it. Holds the guitars securely and I haven't seen any marring of the finish.

Does sound/look like a pretty good option goshawk, I will be giving this some serious consideration! I should have made clear that I was only thinking of a stand for one guitar, but which could accomodate any of my axes. But why not one for all 3? It might prove it's worth over time, and I could still use it at a gig for just one guitar I would think. Cheers for the reply!

I have a Gibson 400c, which has a jumbo body and is generally great, so I trust more solid construction and look at stability. I am currently stands like this for a reasonable price around $ 20.

Cheers merk! The price is a factor I have to consider as I'm not the richest man in the world just at the moment. If you can use this for a nice 400c, then that says quite a lot as well. I have some thinking to do now!

If you want an eye-catcher, check out this rather cheap ($29) stand in rosewood:

On-Stage Stands Rosewood Tubular Guitar Stand and more Guitar Stands & Wall Hangers at GuitarCenter.com.

Or this more expensive (!) version:

    Google Image Result for http://www.sternerguitars.com/images/stand-03.jpg

I use a metal version of the first one and it's cheap, quick, convenient, and versatile (will hold everything from a ukulele to an archtop).

I use these for Dobro, acoustic guitar, electric solid body bass, electric solid body and semi-hollow body electric guitar, and as a tilt-back stand for small mixers and amplifiers:
    Carvin.com :: GSD3

They fold flat, and have a lock to keep them from folding up inadvertently.

They'd be perfect if they'd fit in a guitar case.

I've seen several guitars knocked right off their rickedity stands by a passing coattail. I'd be careful about it. Buy the heaviest, most supportive stand you can find to give yourself a chance. One that wraps part way around the neck. Along with my stand, I bring a towel. If there's a grand piano, I unplug the guitar and lay it on the piano on the towel.

These are what I use as well. I have yellow electrical tape zebra'd on them, so people don't trip over them in dark ened rooms-same as my mic and speaker stands. Never had a guitar knocked off them, or slip on them like the Fender stand I have.

I always put the stands out of the line of traffic. A lot of guys like to show off their axes, but I'll put mine behind the amp if that looks safer.

All my guitars told me they love being cuddled by Hercules stands.

If it's just for a single guitar, here's another one I have and like... an "A" frame with a different approach to holding the guitar in place, and a lot cheaper than the 3-in-1 Hercules.

On-Stage Stands GS7465 Pro FLIP-IT A-FRAME Stand and more Guitar Stands & Wall Hangers at GuitarCenter.com.

Pretty light, pretty compact when folded, seems to fit just about any kind of guitar.

Thanks for all the ideas to everyone. I will indeed have to think a bit about things! The Pro Flip-it also looks like a strong contender to me, cheers goshawk - I'll see if I can locate one from somewhere in the UK. Your advice regarding the towel idea, and keeping the guitar out of harm's way is also taken onboard - thank you TommyD and LP!

And this is probably what I'm getting next since I sit all the time these days. A Farley StagePlayer Guitar Stool:

Thanks to everyone who has replied! I really have so much information now - guess I'll have to make a list of all of them, and check out the availabilty and prices in the UK. With a bit of thought I hope I can make a good decision. That stool/stand combo looks quite tempting Chito, and if I can find/afford one, the GS-200 looks like the real deal also, cheers kawa!
