Noticed an Ibanez 2471 floating around online (posted by the seller today). One of the quickest guitar purchases I've made to date.
The seller seems like a lovely chap. Guitar seems fine but asked him about the action, neck, and truss rod.
Here are the following responses.
"Neck has noticeable relief" (red flag1)
"Bridge is wound all the way down to the base" (red flag2)
"Action is medium low" (red flag3)
"There is no thread past the nut on the truss rod". (green flag1)
"I don't have the right key to see if it adjusts". (annoying but not his fault)
"The strings are likely 12 gauge but I'm not sure" (green flag2)
The guitar is 1.45hrs away from me so a 3.5hr round trip.
There is no truss rod cover on the guitar so someone has likely tried to adjust it previously and lost the cap. (red flag4)
It seems to me as though the neck has too much relief, hence why the bridge has been lowered to its maximum position and the guitar still, has medium to low action.
There is the option that the truss rod may have never been engaged.
From experience however I would put money on the truss rod not tightening or being glued stiff in the neck. That or the truss rod will have a fraction of room to tighten but won't have enough, to bring it into top playing condition.
Either way I doubt the truss rod can be adjusted enough to allow the bridge to be raised in any meaningful way. This could be a design flaw from Ibanez. I've seen another example with the bridge all the way down.
If this guitar was any further away I would pass. There are too many little red flags. However, being a 2471, I just have to know for sure.
Fingers crossed the truss rod will work perfectly and the neck will pull back like a champ. Chances of this happening? About 30% imo.
Ooh and the tone knobs aren't working on the De'armond pickup (red flag5)
Red Flags = 5
Green flags = 2
Wish me luck!

May your red flags fade, and your green lights glow!

Those pickups sound great, round and full. But three knobs on the non-original PG, I wonder what a third knob does?

Titillating - looks like a risk worth taking.

In the past demographics were rather easily modulated without the need for electronic aids. These days, not so much.
