I'm sure it goes without saying, but for the record; many of us have bought things from Jack + would never question that if there were a shipping problem or anything else, Jack would have responded with integrity + complete satisfaction. (I've never had a problem with anything i've bought from JZ.) My experience has been the same with Howard Paul and the Benedettos over these many years.
Pls keep us posted on the resolution Jack.

What's the serial # of this guitar? People may have different opinions about Benedetto's sound but I think there's unanimity about their build quality. What I see on the close-up photos contradicts that.

This is new info to us. You’re describing a guitar that’s been worked hard, put away wet, and maintained on the road for 20 years by techs whose only goal was to keep it playing fine. From what we see, I suspect it was never returned to the Benedetto shop for any work once it left the nest. You haven’t mentioned how it plays at all - does it play and sound fine? I agree completely that you should have been made aware of its condition before you bought it. But to many pros, if it plays fine it is fine. Jimmy B beat his guitars horribly over the years. When I once commented on the lit cigarette wedged above the nut as he dropped his 7 on top of the piano (not gently) on a break, he said something like “It’s my guitar and I don’t care”.
I doubt that the week’s winter vacation hurt it much, if at all. This was a working pro’s instrument and it’s as tired as Keith’s Tele after 20 years of maintenance on the fly. I suspect that it could be restored to its original beauty - it’s a stellar little guitar that’s still in better shape than those of many touring artists. But I would have expected something close to what you got, given its history.

It looks like it has had a re-fret done by an amateur. Just look at the file cuts in the binding. Not Benedetto's work, surely.

Sounds ok but not good enough to invest > $1k in repairs added to my original purchase price.

another update, i called paypal and they said the item was resolved in the buyer's favor by the wrong department and by someone who didn't look at the documents I provided so it's been reopened.

I got more information back from the president of Benedetto, Howard Paul. He was concerned about the crack behind the headstock as well as the neck joint. His records indicate the guitar had a broken truss rod and may have been re-necked at some point. He said from what he sees with frets, it needs a refret and refinish after addressing whatever issues there are in the neck joint but that the crack behind the head stock may mean it needs a new neck. The seller indicated he was an endorser but he's not the original owner of the instrument and never had it registered under his name and it didn't sound like Howard knew who he was.
All in all, a complete mess.

And if it was advertised as being in excellent condition, the seller grossly misled you and should simply take it back & refund your $. read my previous posting above yours. The seller was not the original owner and the instrument had some extreme repair work done on it, likely before the current seller bought it but i think the records were spotty. i got another followup email from Howard Paul. He said if I sent it back to them they would re-neck and refinish it. Total cost for the repair and the $3300 I paid for the axe would exceed the new cost of the hand carved version of the guitar. (Mine is all laminated) Originally Posted by nevershouldhavesoldit

My experience with Paypal is not good. If there is proof that you got the guitar, they may say that any further problems are between you and the seller. That has happened to me and the dollar amount was small enough for me to forego any legal action. Originally Posted by jzucker

Between the rampant theft of today, shipping company problems, insurer problems, quality issues from today's guitar makers and repairmen and sellers without a moral compass, buying guitars sight unseen may be more of a gamble than playing the roulette wheel at the nearest casino.
JZ, no disrespect intended, but please keep sharing your horror stories about guitar purchases online. It keeps my G.A.S. in check and might save me from some pecuniary loss, not to mention unneeded stress.

I have no personal experience with filing a complaint/dispute with paypal - but I am lucky to have a pretty sharp lawyer friend who would step into this with an equally sharp sword and without mercy ....
OTOH how much would it hurt you if you were to let it go and accept the misfortune, have the neck checked, the frets re-seated and leveled and play the heck out of the guitar, with a vengeance ... no offence intended.

I got the repair estimate back from benedetto. $2000 and 4 month turnaround time. However, they are backlogged and do not have time to work on it. So, hopefully with this information paypal will rule in my favor and allow me to return the instrument.
