I'm looking at a 2015 Ibanez EKM10T semi hollow guitar, for under $1,000 +80 shipping (lists new for $1,299). Is this a good semi hollow for more of a jazz sound? If not, what do you recommend? Does anyone own one?

Ibanez doesn't stray too far off the path of their semi design / construction too much. Split coils here (or not), tremolo there (or not), jack position on top or rim, pups, color variants and bling. Uplevel models (MIJ) get more exotic wood in the neck, or MIJ pups but just about every Ibanez I've played and owned have been really well done.

The stores down here stock more of the less expensive models though I have briefly played the EK which during a short demo. I feel it played and sounded like the JSM10, or AS-153. The EK has a trem which to me is a show stopper but if you like that option the EK is about as suitable for your purpose as the JSM or AS, which can get some lovely tones.

A while back Ibanez stopped using the Super 58 "custom" name and replaced it with Super 58 muddying up the water on what pup is what, but I have a pair of MIJ Super 58's in a box that I bought to install in an AS-153. So far I have not felt it necessary to change the Super 58 "custom" pups while others swap them like my GF changes shoes :-) That might tell you something anyway.

This one says it has Super 58s, so I'm hoping they are as good as the Customs? I love the look and I love the tremolo. This guitar is very hard to find used.

It's pretty hard to go wrong with an Ibanez full- or semi- hollow for jazz. I have had several over the years, and gigged with most of them. I'm a fan.

The Super 58s are the top shelf ones.

AFAIK, they call most of their pups Super 58's now, and the MIJ Super 58's don't go in the Chinese guitars, unless someone here like Big Mike knows more.

Here's a listing for an AS93 with "Super 58's" I seriously doubt Ibanez is putting a pair of MIJ pickups @ ~$200 each in a $650 Chinese guitar? Calling Big Mike :-)

Jump on any forum (ok, guitar forum))) and search on Super 58s. Trying to figure out what Ibanez does in terms of these pickups is nigh impossible and sparks a lot of forum lines ! Ibanez really doesn’t give much if any indication of what pickup is made where with what parts. Even support at Hoshino (US importer) had no idea how a Silent 58 was different from a Super 58. (Hey, dude, the silent is potted… see the wax?))) My Ibanez connections say it’s Japanese mysticism at work.

Jimmy blue note might be able to help, he worked for Hoshino.

As gnappi says it’s hard to believe they’d put MIJs in an Indo or Chinese built $500 guitar. It’s not at all hard to believe some marketing genius decided removing the word ‘custom’ . I have both, an Indo build AF95FM, and the LGB300 with MIK Super 58s. There is NO comparison, the MIJ Super 58 is a great pup with depth, subtlety, and warm tone. I believe a far better pup than my ‘89 L5 Gibson pups. The AF95 is, just fine, but it’s a pup to replace not keep forever.
I did replace the Silent 58 in my PM200 with a Fralin Modern PAF and as I’ve said before that is an incredible jazz neck performer that tames the all maple PM.

So I’d love to pull the MIJ 58 and the Indo 58 and do serious non destructive testing. However it waits. I had cataract surgery two weeks ago, and I’m one of the. 15% that have a bad outcome….typical me. So when I can see again promise I will do that.

(really pissed off) jk (wants his right eye back please? )
