Here is my limited experiences: I have three different TV Jones PUs in all Gibson solid body guitars. (I also have a high end Gretsch). I think with the TV Jones the PU that works best for jazz type sounds is the hotter one. I can not remember if it is named powertron or supertron, but it is the one with the blades. It has a sparkly air but still enough roundness. Good definition but still good push. I like that PU so much sometimes I think about getting another set. (I always end up trying new things). The PU I plan on replacing is a classic. It is too thin for the guitar it is in, and I assume for me it just too thin. (I think I might try some more Lyndie Fralins, for that guitar. I really like the P92s in my PRS hollowbody ii). One of my other LPs has a TV Jones P90. I like the clarity and it has a very little growl... if any at all) I would use it for Jazz. Not sure if it would be the best choice, but it would work. It would be a little thin. Good for chords but single note stuff would be a bit of a fight. However some sort of pedal probably make it work really well.

As far gretsch, I think it makes a great jazz guitar, not like a full hollowbody but still sounds good. The problem with my gretsch is that it is neck heavy which really bother me.

I get it, to an extent. If you have a vessel you like, then put the pickup you want, right? Makes sense on paper. It's just so jarring in practice. Some things are just not done. Creeps me out.

I have a MIJ gretsch like guitar Fujigen History brand circa 1990 -- bought it long time ago before even thinking of trying to play jazz - was into rockabilly at that moment. It has pickups which look like filtertrones. The guitar has very round, balanced and powerful tone (although somewhat difficult to tame when playing loud). I like the sound very much although I can't compare it to a 'proper' jazz guitar or a gretsch ( I have a tele and les paul and that is it).

Here it an attempt to convey how it sounds - plain old roland cube 15x and some hastily clumsy fiddling straight into a phone (that is also my first video I ever did):

As a side note: the top looks to be spruce -- is there a way to know if it is laminate or carved (gretsches have laminate top, AFAIK)?

No, I get it. I don't consider it sacrilege or anything... heck, I recently bought a Gretsch centerblock (returned it immediately), that I was intended to put PAFs into. But... I'm going to just buy an ES-339 instead. BUT cooler heads prevailed lol.

I've never liked a strat neck pickup on a tele, or humbuckers on a strat (one exception: the "superstrat" HSS the 80's gave us; I own one). 2 humbucker teles bother me UNLESS they are thinlines with Wide Range Humbuckers... I saw somebody put THREE Filtertrons into a strat... no no no no no
