Great story telling. I’d never seen JW prior to this video. He looks like a guitar sage.
-
A lot of hoopla in my view and it's really apples and oranges when you're comparing these 2 completely different builds. The bling on both is similar, the wood combo (BIG surprise !) and the app. size and measurements but that's about it really. I've owned and played both models - one could never replace the other.
-
They’re equally great guitars in their own right.

Ah, publicity! AFAIK, SKB is simply a Super Eagle with a florentine cutaway, no Cupid's bow, and sometimes a finger tailpiece. Many later SEs came with finger tailpieces as well. It would be pretty amusing to see the list of changes that KB and his wife made (as in, almost none.)
Perhaps comparing the SKB to a Super 400/CES w/florentine cutaway & carved back would be the more useful approach - I suppose one was not readily available. The two guitars are not quite the same, as gitman points out (and he should know, eh?), but they're pretty damned close.
It's a really stupid video.Last edited by Hammertone; 02-02-2026 at 02:44 PM.

I just bought Golden Eagle with same OSB from JW. Yet I covet that beautiful
SE Florentine. LOL

Under the camera, the red tone looks enhanced, but it's really a dark
brown finish with some red overtunes
-
Congratulations! That’s my color, OSB!

the guitar with high action. I think this guitar was bought be a "collector" but never
played. In all respects, it's a mint guitar without single mark. I dont think it was properly
set up after leaving the factory. At the time of purchase, I requested a proper set up with Elixer Nanoweb 12s.
Jonathan at Wolfe Guitar, however, insists he set it up and recited his measurements. Although he replaced the strings (with D'Adarios bc they were out of the Nanos.) and perhaps tweaked the posts, it remained not properly set up for playing. He flatly told me he would issue a return label or credit based on his cost for a technician for a set up. My thinking of course why his technician didn't do so in the 1st place - as actually advertised.
Moreover, on the Wolfe Guitars website, they offered pleking for guitar purchases at a discount price. But that was not offered to me. The guitar was shipped without responding to my message. Jonathan's attitude (if you don't like it, just return it!) doesn't address the want of proper of customer service, nor is it appreciated.
I lowered the posts so I could play it but it buzzes. So I have to get a "real" set up. So should go for a set up or pleking?

It’s a beautiful guitar! I love the OSB finish (in fact, I just bought my second Heritage archtop with that finish this week). I drooled a bit over yours when I saw it on Reverb. Shipping can do funny things to a guitar. Especially this time a year with the temperature being so cold and the wild humidity swings. I would recommend you take it to a professional and have them do a proper setup before making any rush decisions.
-
If you lowered the posts, made sure the bridge is in the right place, and it's still buzzing all over the place - did you try 13s?
I've had a number of instruments that have had bridge damage done by collectors that think 13s or more go on everything. Then they sell it.
-
So trying a set up before considering a plek machine?
I thought a plek machine helps a set up.

I don't want to slight this thread at all. I've had these same issues and sometimes needed to take the guitar to a good luthier to resolve.
As I look back, I have not had such a hard time with Teles and 335s. I don't know why aside from the body having greater stability. Archtops can be finicky and fickle.
-
no reason to plek (expensive) until you’ve made sure your issues can’t be resolved with a setup (cheap). Who knows, maybe it slipped between the cracks before actually receiving the set up you requested or, assuming it was shipped, things might have moved a bit during in transit.

I'd get back to Wolfe Guitars and keep at them , there's some misunderstanding here and you did not get the service you expected or that was advertised. No sense going elsewhere for the moment. As to the Pleck, you should have had the $179 deal. They are a reputable outfit so I don't see why you guys can't agree on something .

Plek expensive? Mine was $200. Today a price for a setup is $125. It’s a wash. Not expensive.
