    Hello everyone,

Can someone please help me ID these flatwounds? These came with my guitar. As far as I can tell, the gauges are 12, 16, 21, 30, 40, and 50 when I measure them with a micrometer. They have no silk ends, and the brass ends are all the same plain brass color. I really like them, and would like to try them brand new.

    Thank you,
    Ed

They aren't D'Addarios, but other than that, I can't say. They just look like generic strings, many brands look the same.

Yes, because D’Addarios have colored brass ends. The previous owner thought they were TIs, but TIs have red silk threads. These are plain metal—no silk threads.

what specific guitar were they on... and where was it from?? & any idea how long they were on the guitar...

the lack of silk and the plain ball ends are the determining factors...

also the smoothness of the flat wrap

tho i will say, you should not get so hung up on what string was on there...probably old and worn and very dull thunky...maybe what you like about them...get a new flat set and play 'em till you get that sound again...it'll happen

    cheers

Yes, I agree with you. I’ve gotten other sets and have moved on. I guess, I was more curious than anything. It was on a ‘75 Gibson Johnny Smith that I picked up last year.

ok i'll take an educated (but complete) guess...

the plain brass ends and no silk eliminates a large portion of current flatwounds...

looking at the pic close-up..and at the smooth finish my first thought was d'aquisto

based on the guitar and it's age...and also the gauges you gave

i'd guess they are d'aquisto 12's...(& they do match up closely with your measurements)

the bad news is they are no longer made...though any usa stainless steel flatwound string with a smooth finish will get you there...dr's, labella, ghs..etc

of course they could be old gibson flats..or even old fenders or....or.....or....haha

    cheers

Thank you, Neatomic! I appreciate your help! I’m sure they weren’t the originals, as this was the previous owner’s main guitar. But, I’ll take your advice and just try some other strings.
