Well, I've finally found my setup and I'm very happy with it. Running the Eastman AR372 through a 68 DRRI (this one with a Celestion 150 watt). Ultimately I had to play around with pickup/pole height and amp settings to dial it in but I finally found the tone I've been looking for. For practice I've been really happy with the volume around 2/2.5, the treble 6 or 7 and the bass around 2 (whatever the stock neck pickup is, A Kent Armstrong-branded PAF style hum supposedly, it sure is BOOMY) and now I have nice deep bass sounds that are articulate AND higher frequency sounds that are round and mellow but still punchy, especially around the 9-12 frets... I was surprised how difficult this proved to achieve but I am a jazz noob for sure.

Now all I guess is left is to play the damn thing...

It's seriously nice to not have to think about anything but what I'm playing- it makes learning that much easier.

Well, that's the Barney Kessel approach. A guitar you don't have to worry about and an amp that works! Your avatar would approve.

That's so funny you mention that. I watched a video of him talking about his guitar and when he said something to that effect, I was thinking huh, must be nice...

Lol. I said, hey, lemme just get a jazz box and a tube amp and we'll be cookin with gas... nope. Maybe I'm picky or too focused on other people's tone. But whatever get me playing more is a good thing.

Yes, the knob twirling can be time-consuming, but think of it as practice for when you go for a jam or a gig and you are in a room with a completely different set of acoustic characteristics that will change during the course of the evening as people come and go. Just keep twiddling to approximate the sound in your head, and if you actually get it, thank the un-seen powers for the favor. The terror/joy is 0.5 the fun!
