Hi,
I have been designing an archtop and noticed that Myca guitars commonly use side mounted pots. I am planning similar for mine.I think it's a fantastic clean look.

While they are often considered less than optimal for jazz, the Gretsch Super Chet comes to mind.

It is def. a clean look, especially on more modern designed guitars but I have become so accustomed to reach towards the trad. placed controls on my stage guitars that I would have a hard time with one of these new ones - I'm constantly riding the volume AND tone controls so it's not for me. YMMV

Hammertone, you beat me to this variation (which could work for me, too) .... there have also been a few US made guitars with the controls on the tailpiece and B. Trenier (or Mr. Grasso ?) picked up on that idea with this guitar :
