Luckily it was only a gig bag and wasn't harmed. I said something to the driver, and he obviously couldn't have cared less, walked away saying "Yeah they ain't been packin' too good."

Ugh, that's awful, Woody -- glad the case was "OK!"
What's lousy is the inconsistency with the various carriers. I received a guitar last week, sent UPS, from about 800 miles away (a few states here); it was on time and in perfect condition (thankfully!). I've had similar experiences with FedEx and USPS, and I've also had things "lost" (temporarily) by all of them, but never damaged.
Frustrating.
