While skimming through local CL guitar listings today, I stumbled onto this: A Hutch L5 listed for $1200 with a very suspicious looking photo attached. No real description, no additional photos...smelled rotten but I emailed the poster just to satisfy my curiosity. Sure enough, there was this dubious reply: Hello, Sorry for dealy, the guitar is still for sale, is a 1993 Gibson L5 Wes Montgomery Custom, well maintained. Slightly used in 100% working condition. The final price is $1,200 (including delivery and handling to your address). I'm selling this because my father of only 63 years died 5 months ago in a car accident, the guitar belonged to my father and it brings me bad memories and that's the reason I want to sell it. Me and my husband travel a lot with our business and we want to make this deal through eBay motors.
So if you're interested in purchasing this guitar just reply me your full name, full address and phone number, so I can notify eBay. Once that is done, they will contact you to explain the entire procedure.

Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!

I asked for additional pics and got this:

    Hi again,

As I told you in my first email, got a new contract and moved back to my hometown, Omaha, NE. Before leaving I had prearranged the deal with eBay so my presence isn't necessary. They won't give me any money until you receive and test the guitar It is at the shipping company, ready to be delivered. The shipping cost is included in the selling price of the guitar! You got 5 days to test it and inspect the guitar. So if you want to make this deal I need the following details from you: full name, shipping address and phone number. Once I got all the details, I will forward them to eBay and they will proceed with the order. They'll email you with all the information that you need to complete this deal and also they will confirm that the deal is conducted through them and I'm a legitimate seller. Waiting for your email with the requested details.

    Thank you

It's absolutely a scam, and a common one at that. Usually it's a free piano if you pay the moving cost upfront. Always the same story: It belonged to a deceased relative, and the seller wants to get rid of the "memories."

Apart from ridiculously low prices and formulaic background stories on why they need to sell an item, CL scammers often take a scatter-gun approach to posting their ads.

This particular one has been posted in multiple states.

Hope Santa force-feeds the seller a lump of coal.

Hello , 2004 Polaris Predator is still available. It is in a good condition, no damages, it has never been involved in any kind of accidents, no problems at the engine, runs very well. It has an 90cc engine with 14,000 miles, a perfect atv. I'm selling it at this final price $400 because my wife died 6 months ago (she had a heart attack) and brings me bad memories and that's the reason I want to sell it asap. I also got a new job and moved to another city, and many other things have priority now.

I got a similar message on CL from a "buyer" who wanted to complete the transaction over normal email. I just googled the precise language to confirm that it was bogus and didn't reply.

It was on my CL as well and had an email address prominently displayed. An Email phishing scheme I assume.

Just saw this and immediately came here to check. An L-5 seems like an odd guitar to use in a scam, especially vastly underpriced. A Les Paul or 335 would get them way more replies than a few interested jazzers.

They do use those, too, but there are also many more people who know a lot about LP's or 335's and would immediately spot that it's a fraud. Also, the scammers are probably cycling through models to try to disguise the scam a little and experiment to see which variants attract responses. If they just do the same guitar again and again (or model of car, or fancy watch, or whatever other luxury goods they're doing this with), the scam becomes too obvious. To those of us who are both knowledgeable about the item and have scam radar, the scams are obvious. But we're not the targets.
