Apparently it’s the coating on some of the extended life strings. Don’t use them, so no issues.

I don't like coated strings. I just keep mine clean and dry and change them when they start to look wobbly on the old Peterson Digital strobe tuner. As a compulsive string buyer, I've got stock on hand.
