To my ears the JC series seem to lack mids. Maybe the tone circuit was designed to imitate the Fender blackface scooped tones. JC's seem even more exaggerated than the blackface amps in that regard. Of course the mids can be adjusted with EQ but does the mid control on the amp centered at the right frequencies for this purpose? When you increase the mids does it sound nasal or do you get more body (ie does it bring back the lower mids)?

I've recently returned to the JC55 after a couple of years focused on the Little Jazz.

Chords sound better on the JC55.

The JC55 reportedly can sound a little icy, but somehow I've made my peace with it, possibly because of high frequency hearing loss.

The last couple of things I posted in the Showcase section were made with the JC55. I don't usually use a traditional jazz tone, so it may not be relevant to others. That said, maybe if I could get a great traditional jazz tone out of the gear I'm using, I would do it.

I'm letting go of a MINT JC-40 if anyone wants it..

Barely used and only in my dinky studio.

I run across JC 120's on tour from time to time. I find I get the best 'jazz' sound dialed in by turning the BASS and TREBLE all the way off and using the MIDDLE as a single tone control

That was Grant Green's method with a tube amp, according to George Benson.
