and through a raezer's edge open back 2x10 with celestion golds.
Just learned this tune today. Can't believe I hadn't learned this before. Such a great classic.

That is one of the nicest tones I have heard from you, Jack.
-
thanks!

Your playing is, of course, superb and at a level that I dare not even dream of. Not brown-nosing; I am sincere about it.

thanks again and for listening and commenting.

Super nice tone! Guitar needs a setup though - fret buzz all over the place...
-
it just got back from a setup! It's fine. You should have heard it before the setup!
The buzzing is just part of the character. I didn't even notice it until you pointed it out. I see it as growl when you really dig into the note.Last edited by jzucker; 10-12-2020 at 09:54 AM.

Guitar setup is all compromise. Higher action gives a clearer tone, but it's harder to play. The exact compromise location is a matter of personal preference. If the guitar is easy to play and the tone is acceptable to the player, it's all good. Everyone has a different opinion on tone.

and honestly, on a guitar i paid about $800 for it's the best I can do. There's nobody else locally that can do a better job. I could send it out to get pleked or send it to NY but it's going to run between $400-$500. I don't mind the buzzing. It reminds me of the growling that you hear saxophonists get when they dig in.

Didn't want to come across as negative - I heard your playing before and never heard buzzing like in this video. The buzzing is not *that* bad - I am maybe a bit too sensitive

Otherwise the guitar sounds really great though and you playing is really cool.

Thanks, you didn't come across as being negative and I think you have a valid point. When I first got the instrument it sounded like a sitar so I took it into the best repairman in the area and he improved it immensely. I lowered the action a tad from where he left it because I like it at a certain height for all my instruments. But it had improved so much I guess I just got used to the buzzing and took it as part of the character of the instrument. Unfortunately as I mention, there's just nobody else in the area who could do a better job. There used to be another local guy who was amazing at fret levels but he recently retired.

I did raise the action a little. But I have to say as guitarists, I think we sometimes get carried away with the technical aspects of the instrument. Paul Bollenback's guitars always seem to have a little bit of buzz to them and yet he's one of the busiest jazz guitarists in the world. It just doesn't matter that much. The buzzing doesn't detract from the music. I'm not saying i'm in the same league with Paul by any means but you know what I mean!

You can hear string slap on many, if not most, of Herb Ellis' recordings. It's a choice, perfect tone or perfect action. You can raise it up to Freddie Green's height, or get it as low as possible, or somewhere in between. Just as it's a choice of where to set the tone controls, which amp, which speaker, which strings, ad nauseum. All those choices are personal, and one is as valid as another. I struggle too much with my own tone to have time to criticize anyone else's.

I can't say I noticed fret buzz there, at least not as anything egregious. Overall, I think it's good sound. And, yeah, great tune worth learning. And thanks for the Joe D/Bollenback link. Bollenback is one of the best guys around, IMO.
