I came across this guitar while cruising through archtop.com. The pickguard looks like Jackson Pollock goes Cubist with a lot of Duchamp's "Dude Descending a Staircase." Joe describes it as a "later Gibson bound marbleized tortoise pickguard, with volume control and jack." Where does one find something like this?

That's variegated celluloid or "head cheese" plastic as some refer to it.
It came on Gibson Super 400s from '34-'64 before it was discontinued.
It was reissued and used on Lee Ritenour L-5s but I have no idea where to find it now. I actually need a couple pieces for pickguards.

HaHa! My Mom introduced me to hog head cheese when I was a kid. Was it meat or was it cheese?! It was the most disgusting thing I ever ate....and quickly spit out. Yuck!!

That said, the variegated celluloid pickguard looks fantastic.

Typically referred to as "marbled celluloid" when talking about Super 400 pick guards.

I have used bronze colored celluloid to make replicas, comes kinda close, but the real deal eggplant like color is nowhere available. Youre not the only one looking for it, I had dozens of requests when I was still making guards...

I use these guys for pickguard material at times. You have to search around but I have found some good stuff that is close. I made someone non-cut 1930's Dangelico New Yorker pickguard using my own for a template. One could tell it was not original but it fit the bill and more importantly the thickness. Some stuff is too thin and other is too thick. Go to the factory store they have smaller samples.

The replica looks really good in its own right. If one wasn't expecting an exact duplicate, your version would stand on it own.
