Amplitube 4 Max is on sale for a few more days; a few of those are pretty solid. People like the archetype sims but they're pricey, but not as pricey as the softube ones, which I generally prefer. Bias fx and Helix are popular with the kids these days.
All should work with a frfr cab or headphones just fine.

Will you be moving between Mexico and Canada constantly?
My wife is bugging me to move south to the Mediterranean ocean permanently. I still have to keep working like 10 - 15 years but I guess most can be done remotely. So I'm interested to get experiences from others.
About the amplification issue. The band I'm in now uses in ear monitoring so I jumped on the DI-train completely after going back and forth before depending on the PA-situation. I had the opportunity to A/B my DI-solution with my Fender Vibrolux and went with the DI-solution. I used to use a Tech 21 Fly Rig Cali but now upgraded to an Ritchie Kotzen Fly Rip v2 which adds not only an XLR-out and tuner but also a switch to use the output with headphones.
I didn't try digital modellers because I hate latency and programming. The fly rig is layed out like an old-school amp and pedalboard and frankly has more to offer than I need. The preamp does a good job at emulating a fender twin.
At home I use it into my audio-interface and studio monitors / headphones and with the band I plug the XLR into the PA and use in-ears. It took me like 5 minutes to get used to the in-ears and now I enjoy to hear everybody in this 8-piece band so well. The fly rig would work into a powered speaker as well.
It is also a great option for frequent traveler – my whole rig fits into my guitar bag. As I don't like driving so this gives me a lot of freedom to go to local gigs by bike or take the subway. If there is a decent PA I'm good to go.

I don't know if we'll ever get back to Mexico. It now has had the third most deaths from Covid of any country and the disease is still raging with no serious effort to stop it. Civil society is thin at the best of times and this is really stressing Mexican society in very bad ways. At my age, I'm not will to just hunker down for an extended period anywhere and that's what staying in Mexico would require. So we'll see. We sold most of our stuff before we left and rented out our apartment for at least a year. Right now we're just focused on whether we can make a life for ourselves here in Canada and we'll see if my wife, who spent the first 48 years of her life in California can make it through a Canadian winter in one piece. My primary functions moving forward are probably always going to be low volume home playing and recording so is probably a better solution than an amp. I wouldn't use headphones because I don't want to spend that many hours with something on my head but a nice pair of monitors would probably do the trick. How easy (or hard) it it to program? Jim, As a modeler, the small, lightweight GT001 is pretty good. It doesn’t include a looper. I don’t play around 99.9% of the effects. I have one patch and use it everyday. It is a fantastic usb recording tool. Great drivers, zero latency. It has an auxiliary input and that helps me hook my iPad up. I use tempo. It slows down songs so I can learn note for note stuff. The headphones (the good over ear type, you wear for hours and forget you have on) allow me HEAR everything better. Which allows me to learn quicker and more accurately. The setup works for me. A nice set of powered monitors would probably be outstanding. The modeler has infinite adjustability. It is not simple, there is a learning curve. But it has a program called Boss Tone Lab that helps simplify the interface as it projects its functions on your computer and you make adjusts from there.
Don’t eliminate the open back headphone idea. They are indispensable for recording. And you will hear your great playing better than you ever had before.

I think you know that I used a POD HD desktop for many years so I'm used to the concept. It certainly make recording a LOT easier. I got so worn out by recording the conventional way that now I just plug my guitar straight into my interface and then shape the tone a bit after it's recorded. I've gotten a lot better at it this year but it sure isn't ideal. The other alternative that I'm considering is a Boss Nextone amp. It's a more all in one solution in terms of sound shaping and sound output but a lot of the concepts very similar to using a modeler just in an amp shaped box. Originally Posted by Max405

Id be in some serious trouble if I lived a place where 3 MONTHS out of the year, there is more than 20” of snow on the ground at all times. I would lose it. I can’t stand snow.
And 2.1 hrs of sunlight!?! Per day!?!
That’s where I would expect to go if I was imprisoned for some reason.

Here's something you should try. Click on the link below. It will show you all of the homes available in Victoria today that are selling for $325,000 or less. Have a look at the listings and tell me how many of them are houses? How many of them have more than 1 bedroom? How many of them have more than 1 bathroom? As for the weather, yes, the weather is better in the BC Lower Mainland and parts of the Island. But this is Canada. Winter is a fact in Canada. By Canadian standards, Halifax is pretty mild. I grew up in Winnipeg. Halifax is very NOT Winnipeg. It has free health care. It's very pretty and it's a comfortable size. Even with the real estate market booming, we can afford a nice home here. And if the virus ever stops dominating the world, we can afford go away for at least part of the winter to someplace genuinely warm just like Canadians have been doing for as long as I can remember.

Victoria is some kind of Canadian fantasyland when it comes to winter. Halifax has a nice toy winter.
Jim mentioned Winnipeg. I grew up in Montreal, and have spent too much time in Ottawa on business. Best to avoid these places in winter.

Lots of clouds, yes. My limited research indicates that it's a raw wet place. It's a few thousand miles north of what I would accept as livable. But someone has to live in Canada, and I feel for them but can't reach them. Where I live is not ideal, but at least freezing to death is not something anyone worries about. I hope you and your wife are happy there, Jim. Everyone has different priorities, and yours are as valid as mine.

OK, now that we've determined that Jim will be frozen solid and have mushrooms growing out of his face due to Halifax hovering between -5 and +5 degrees C and it either raining or snowing 365 days per year, except for 30 seconds of slightly drier and warmer gloom on the summer solstice, perhaps we can also recommend him an amp that will sound terrible, weigh a ton, and maybe explode ...
Or to celebrate the return to Canada, perhaps a Traynor.
