The Mono bag is not made for flying and won't work as checked luggage. It protects from bumps but it's not crush proof. You could only fly with it if you could get your guitar inside the cabin somehow.

I know this is an old post but I've been looking around for a gigbag that will carry either my 17" Heritage Golden Eagle or my 16" Heritage H575. The Gator bag above does NOT fit a 17" guitar. However the Gator Transit Series Jumbo Acoustic Gig Bag looks like it will do the trick IF there is room for the bridge of the archtop. It says body height is 5.5" which is far higher than the 3 " body width of a GE. Anyone have any experience with this case? It is way cheaper than the Mono($130 vs $280).

Well I might have to take that back. I might have been looking at the wrong specs. On their website, Gator posted the specs as:
Body Length 23.2"
Body Height 5.5"
Lower Bout Width 16.7"
Middle Bout Width 14.8"
Upper Bout Width 12"
Overall Length 46.1"
Might be tight at the lower bout but I'll trust you on that. Thanks for the correction.

It will stretch an extra 0.3 inches. It's a tight fit for a 17", but it does fit, at least mine does. The guitar doesn't move around inside, which is probably a plus.

I would think that if the sides of the case are the slightest bit flexible, a 17” archtop would fit in an acoustic dreadnaught bag, considering the narrower rims of the guitar.
-
My 17" Benedetto style acoustic will not fit in my RB Continental gig bag. When considering the body height, you have to consider from the thickest part of the body to the top of the bridge, compared to a dreadnought guitar where the bridge is essentially flat on the top. in the case of my archtop, that is 5 7/8". With the wider lower bout vs. my dreadnought and the tall bridge, I cannot safely zip my gig bag with that guitar. It happily accommodates my ES-175 and my dreadnought. So my 17" goes everywhere in it's hard case.
-
It depends on the bag. Even 1/2" difference (or less, depending on the specific bag and guitar) can be enough to let some nominal 17s fit while others don't. My 17" Eastman 810CE7 will not go into a Mono bag made for dreads - I had to buy a Jumbo Acoustic Mono for it. The Road Runner RR1AG Dreadnought bag will take most 17" archtops, although it's too short for the extended headstock on many 7s.

The 17" alone will fit in Gator Transit Series Jumbo, Mono Jumbo and Acoustic Dread, and Reunion Blues Acoustic Dread and Continental Voyager (the latter being the heaviest case). As you mention, the kicker is the depth/height of the guitar that includes the top of the bridge. When I last measured this, it was about 5". Of all the gigbags mentioned, only the Gator has a depth/body height of 5.5" with the rest being 5". That being said, Jonathan Stout has previously posted that the Mono M80 Jumbo Acoustic(the most expensive gigbag) clearly fits his 17+" archtops. Fortunately, I'm not in a great hurry.

With full size 17" archtops it seems the problem is mainly finding a bag deep enough, so you avoid putting excessive pressure on the guitar's bridge (and thus the top). I have tried a bunch for my 17" and all were too shallow. I think the acoustic super jumbo ones are the best fit, around 14.5-16 centimeters deep. Thomann seems to have two:
Ritter Carouge Super Jumbo Guitar EGR – Thomann Ellada
Ritter Bern Super Jumbo Guitar ANT – Thomann Ellada
The Mono and Reunion Blues ones are way thinner, no more than 13 centimeters. They don't fit my archtop, which needs 15 centimeters depth.

I have a Gator Transit GT-Jumbo case that was relatively cheap and easily fits my Golden Eagle.
It should be plenty adequate for the use you describe, but please keep in mind that while a decent gig bag will protect your guitar from minor bumps and brushes it still needs to be handled with care. One thing to be careful about is the neck fitting through doorways when the bag is on your back. Good idea to lower it first.
-
Thanks for this. You must have some huge archtops. The Ritter bags look really great but they might be much larger than my need. The lower bout width for each is 18+" (my Heritage is 17") and the depth/width is 5.7" (when I measure the Heritage including the bridge, it doesn't much exceed 5"). That being said, they do look like nice sturdy bags.

And if the guitar will be getting jostled with heavy objects or sharp blows, a hard case is better for sure. After all, it's a carved top!
