    Squier Affinity Tele, Butterscotch Blonde-butterscotch-blonde-jpg

[NOTE: new video, a day later---today---posted below.]

My wife gave me this for Christmas, God bless her.
First solid body I've played in over 17 years, maybe longer!
Feels great but as it's Christmas morning and we have guests coming for Christmas dinner, I won't be plugging this in and feeling like I'm 13 again just yet. Maybe tomorrow...

NEED GIG BACK RECOMMENDATIONS, PLEASE. Thanks!

    love the color, happy picking.

The guitar reminds that I have an idea for the chorus of a country song...

"I like me some shit grinning, chicken picking, fast ripping, country guitar"

Although, I believe you are thinking of your tele as a jazz guitar.

Nice line---share the song when you're done with it!

I like the way some play jazz on a Tele, yes, but also I like country guitar too, and rockabilly stuff. It's nice to play a solid body again and be able to bend strings! ;o) I wrote a lot of songs on a Strat years ago and they'll probably sound much punchier on this guitar than on my Artcore set up with heavier gauge flatwounds.

By the way, my "Like" button hasn't worked for several days now. No idea why. Cleared my cache thinking that might help but it didn't. Anyway, I can't "like" things other than this way now. Thanks, guys!

Ooh that's pretty! Always had a weakness for butterscotch. Congratulations, and play it in good health!

I have one of those. Mine is a stupidly good guitar for the price. I even used it for quite a few gigs. Enjoy!

Congrats Mark, Stratosphere sells inexpensive gig bags for Teles.

So here it is, plugged in and everything.

Not a legit demo of the guitar, just my kid-like joy at the newness of it. Hadn't played a solid body since the '90s. Feels like coming home in a way.

That was fun to listen to, Mark! Wondering how you got along without a Tele for so long....

That's a cool song Mark. And, you play it well. And, the guitar sounds great. Fwiw, I'm using 10s on my tele.

For me, undoubtedly because of my formative years, a solid body guitar with all that pull offs and hammer-ons and overdrive and bends, etc., to me that's what a guitar is suppose to sounds like.

Frank, I know what you mean! Hendrix was my first guitar hero. I loved distortion, bends, slapback echo, the whole shmear. One reason I was slow to warm to jazz guitar (--I always liked stride piano and bluesy sax players and the sound of a high-hat and a walking bass) is that it sounded so dull, lifeless. But after years of playing flatwounds, I came to love THAT sound and found the "processed" sound of jazz fusion players unappealing.

But this guitar sure feels good in my hands and under my fingers. (One thing I do NOT love about slinky strings is the squeaking!) The neck freels real good to me too. I'll be playing it a lot!

By the way, my "Like" button still doesn't work, so I can't "like" the comments people make to me. I hope that gets fixed soon.

Happy NGD & Merry Xmas !!!

My first tele was a Squire Affinity Blem that I bought new for $125. I modded the heck out of it and then stupidly sold it!
I wish I had it back now. It played just great. I keep hoping it will show up on Craigslist!

Regarding a gig bag recommendation, most any electric gig bag will do. I like gig bags a little thicker than the base factory models, but not as heavy as a mono or Reunion blues (which, BTW would cost more than that guitar!!!) For example, Ibanez is making some cool looking gig bags in various colors with some fake suede.

I have a couple of "Union Station" Pro Gig Bags that I found at a local shop some years ago. Some kind of Off brand, but really quite nice. I like them a lot, but I don't know if they are still available. They have good padding and more importantly, the zippers have not broken !!!!

Funny thing about that Affinity tele -- I think it played every bit as good as the American Standard I now own.

hey congrats...good choice!...alder body!!...it's got 9-42 nickel plated steel strings...which are bright...best strings i found for it were ghs big core pure nickel rockers...the bigger core makes it 9.5 and/or 10.5....the little extra helps...also flats work well on it..but don't have to go too heavy...10-44 is nice for it!

got one on a lark about 15 years ago...had a friend managing one of the big chains, and she sold it to me at cost and let me go through about a 1/2 dozen of them to find the best one!..became a great couch player

i know my way around it, tech wise/setup etc... so any questions or opinions needed, just ask

    cheers

Thanks for the offer! I'll take you up on that in a few day. (Ordered a guitar tool kit. With my Ibanez, I only changed strings every 18 months or so and it never went out of tune, but I expect the Tele to be more picky becuase of slinkier strings and much more bending and such.)

Before that, I realized the Fender Mediums I've been using seem too big now. I have some Jazz IIIs but they seem a little heavy, though I like the size. It may be time to go back to a teardrop. ;o) Any suggestions? (That goes for anyone else here.)

    Mark, I love it!
Your right hand is quiet yet soulful. Really nice playing.
It’s nice to feel like a kid again. It’s great hearing your voice.
    And congratulations on your marriage!
2019 was a great year for me and it seems like it’s a great year for you too!
Thanks buddy. That put a smile on my face. It’s nice seeing a 61 year old, 14 year old! Keep living.
    Love it.

hah..you are just not used to the light gauge nickel plated roundwound string brightness and feel!!!...you can really hear the difference in attack between different picks...might want to try some nylon picks...the dunlop grays..

also watch those jimmy bruno vids where he buries the pick in his hand to fingerpick...good trick to master...had been doing it for years, but still got a big kick out of seeing jimmy doing it...they even had a slow mo vid at one point

anyways..dont rush it..enjoy..and whenever you have a q, just let me know and i may be able to help

    cheers

ps -if you want to nurture the hybrid country pickin aspect..its greatest exponent...james burton...used 08-38!! haha

I had heard that about Burton! He used a thumb pick and a fingerpick, right? (I think the finger pick is on his middle finger.) He sure can play. But I think I'm a lot bigger than he is---if I had strings that light, I'd probably bend a 1/4 step when I was trying to play dead on!

You're right, the light gauge nickel plated roundwounds are very different than what I'm used to. Used strings like that on a Strat way long ago but my fingers have forgotten. Also, my action has been medium-high for years now. The Tele is low and should be low. Something else to get used to. I think I'll be happy with it. It's a hoot.

A bit of James Burton with Elvis.

Thank you, Joe. You've made my day!

(By the way, it now seems that not only is my "Like" button not working, I can't see any likes anyone else makes on any post in any thread. That's a new one on me. I'm sure Dirk will iron it out asap.)

I have a Levy's gig bag that I like a lot. Didn't cost much, but it has held up well over a number of years.

As for gig bag, a mono sleeve costs almost as much as that guitar, but its Wonderful.

Cheap gig bag is fine for me, I've got one, a squier strat and tele but just one cheap gig bag between them. These guitars are really tough I wouldn't worry much about babying them.

Sounds great. The Telecaster can be used as a jazz box. I have a few Telecasters. I string them up with flatwound strings and roll down the treble. I try my best to sound like Ed Bickert.

    Congratulations!

I got my first Telecaster last year at age 60, the first solid body guitar I've had since I was a teenager in the 1970s. I just love the instrument and share your joy.
