Ha, thanks guys. There were many times when I seriously thought I would never see this day. It's here, and I'm with my wife, and our daughter has come up from London for the occasion. I've no need for religion, as this is my Heaven.

Happy birthday Rob, it is only right and proper that you are allowed a new guitar on your 60th!

(although thinking about it, I didn’t get one on my 60th...I may have to do something about that...)

Godin 5th Ave Jazz is similar to what Style B offers plus a cutaway. It does not look as fancy and I had to change the pickup to a Bartolini 5J but the end result was very satisfying.

Even cheaper but equally good sounding option is the Epiphone Premium ES-175, there are more reviews and experience about these than the PMs and the Style B.

Happy birthday, Rob, and thank you for the enjoyment that your videos and playing have brought so many of us. Let us know how it goes, you are the guinea pig as I am staring down the barrel of 60 in a couple of months.

Happy Birthday! My older siblings have warned me about the 60’s but what do they know?
I have watched your videos for some time now and enjoy them very much. Thanks for taking the time to share them with us.

I have had the Style B for a few years. I have found it very comfortable to play and the neck fits my hand like a glove. The pickup is ok enough not to search out a replacement. I got it as an open box special for a decent price. It seems to be a better build than the XL’s. Less sloppy in my opinion. I could never afford the real thing but this is close enough on my budget and skill level;-)

    Enjoy!

    Thanks all. Much appreciated.

Well, I have news: I won't be buying another guitar...I've bought a 2nd-hand Leica Q instead. Photography is my other passion, and one of these - my first (and probably last) Leica - came up at a relatively very low price. The guitar will have to wait. Thankfully I have enough instruments to keep me distracted.

Here's a recent one from the local river, Reflections On The Water Of Leith, Konica Hexar 35mm film shot, Ilford Delta 400 film:

and my daughter just last week in London, Kodak Portra 400 film, same camera:

What does the lower bout measure 16 or 17 inches?

    Happy birthday youngster!

My 66th happeneth in a couple weeks. Sigh.

After 40+ years as a professional portrait photographer I can certainly appreciate the interest in a film Leica. They were quite a camera. My film work was all medium format though. And some 4x5 work. Started with a Bronica s2 for a couple years, then the rest of the time in film using a brace of matched Mamiya RB67 Pro-S rigs.

Miriam and I each had our own complete set of body, backs, focus hoods and lenses. Ran those about 26 years. Switched to digital, sold one set off, haven't used the other since.

Most recent camera addition for me, a BlackMagic Pocket Cinema 4k that ain't no pocket camera. One heck of a cine beast for the price. It's in a full "cage", with mountings for external monitor, battery, SSD drive, mic, and whatever.

I do testing and tutorials on using Premiere Pro and it's Lumetri workspace for professional video color correction and grading. My editing/grading suite is in our old b/w darkroom, still completely setup.

Last time any film or prints were processed there was around 2004, but ... we just stopped using it. All the beakers still hung over the sink on the racks, bottles on shelves, trays in their slots under the 10 foot long custom sink. And the enlarging station still completely operational. We've boxes of paper, most in freezer for all this time.

But a Leica ... just sounds sweet.

    Enjoy!

    Hi Rob and Birthday salutations.

I was 73 five days ago and playing at guitar since 1961. As Michael suggested about filing down the nails and immersing in Tarrega.. I am there.

I still appreciate a good archtop, but like you, 17" has become awkward. My ideal would be a 16" with a 24-25" scale.
The style B looks good but my other requirement would be a minimum of 1 3/4 " nut.
The Godin is close in specs and modestly priced. Light and plays easily. Just a thought.

    Thanks, lads.

rNeil, I bow to your knowledge and expertise in the world of photography. Let me know if you have some images online. I mainly use a Bronica SQAi, a Konica Hexar, and the Sigma SDQuattro with an adapter for the Bronca lenses. Never even heard of the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema 4k, but I'll check it out.

    bohemian46 , I
think Michael was referring to this: rmclassicalguitar And thanks for your tip re the Godin.

Fred, my man, balance is indeed important. I work from home, teaching during the day, watching crap on TV at night - all in the same room. I took up photography to get me out of the house. So I go for walks most days, camera always to hand.

MY daughters are going to meet in Edinburgh for the Fringe festival, sadly without me. If you run into two stunningly beautiful young German ladies, say hello from me.
