Well, as far as I can see, the only NY in the ledgers where ‘just’ his name ‘Mel Bay’ is written down is #2040. The other ones have ‘Mel Bay model’ or the Gravois connection. So I thought that #2040 was Mel’s personal New Yorker. And the guitar on the method cover. #2040 is a blonde one.

The one I mentioned just has the model (New Yorker) along w imported which of course means the imported maple he was using and just his name as well but (per.) added. I don't think we can look into those notes too much.
The one pictured on the book's cover is an artist rendering/retouched pic anyway, so who knows....

Speaking about particular D'Angelicos, I wonder who has Kenny Burrell's Blond New Yorker that he used on his album with John Coltrane? A Wesmo with a long forum history-kbda-jpg

I played it @ Mandolin Brothers a long time ago, Kenny had it refinished to sunburst by then, a mere 75K at the time.
I do remember it was originally ordered by Al Chernet.

Larry Wexer sent me a copy of Kenny's letter of provenance for his former D'A when it was sold through Mandolin Brothers, including a list of some of the albums Kenny played it on.

Did Kenny play a D'A on the Coltrane recordings? I thought those sessions predated Kenny's D'A, despite the fact there's a picture of Kenny playing a blonde D'A. Of course, I could be wrong.

that's a good question. I just looked it up in the ledger, that NYer was a '53, though for some reason I seem to recall it was it listed as a '54 when I got the MB Vintage News.
I think the Trane/Burrell session was from '59. Problem is I don't know when he bought the guitar, any mention in the letter?
I see Chernet bought another NYer in '60

Some of the sweetest sounds from Kenny and John IMHO.

That 75K in 1994 dollars is pretty much 150K in today's dollars.

Too rich for my blood. That said, I will bet it is a great guitar. Kenny did two recordings with Trane. His tone is sublime on both recordings, but his tone is almost always sublime, so I don't know if the guitar used matters that much when in the hands of a master. And when it comes to jazz guitar, Kenny is one of the legends, a master of masters.

Can't help but see one of the last year or two of the quaint world, more analog than digital. Print notice. Money orders! Five or so years before Paypal. No Affirm nor Breadpay yet. $75K in the era of inconvenience. Now $161,841.60 in 2025. Less than a new Bentley, and likely no depreciation. And more ways to pay. Just had to find an owner with both cash & appreciation. -Phil
