Found this Tuesday morning on Reverb. Three crummy photos. I wrote the seller asking him to text me photos and he explained that his BIL had passed away and he was selling it on behalf of his sister. The photos he sent weren't much better but Joe immediately found it on Mark Campellone's website in the gallery. Being his sister is a widow and it's Easter week I made them a very good offer which he accepted. All necessary info relayed back and forth, I walked him through taking it to a UPS Store for them to pack and ship. An hour later it was professionally packed and fully insured.

It got here this morning. This waiting for expensive guitars is getting a little old on me. But she is a monster not only looks but it's a damn cannon. Joe says it's made for a finger style player which the seller confirmed. That volume volume knob smack in the middle of the pick guard is going, I may have DeaconMark make me a replacement or use on of the Aaron Cowles ebony guards I've been saving for a rainy day on her (yes, it is raining). It's like brand new except it's broken in some. She's more of a beast than you can imagine... So Joe, you think this guys it huh ?? It truly is MAGNIFICENT...

    2017?
The serial # on that guitar is 1710400.
That makes it the 171st guitar (first three digits) built by Mark, from the year 2000 (last two digits).
Looks good for a 19-year-old guitar.
    Hooray for Mark Campellone!

    What a beautiful Campellone archtop!

Especially the quilted maple back and sides - lucky you!

Mike did you confirm that the serial number is the same serial number as the one in the gallery?
Check the label. Take a picture of it.
The seller told you it was a 2017 but we didn’t think it was due to the aging of the top.
In any case, Mike you have every right to feel good about the guitar you bought. It is a magnificent guitar. And once again, there “was a widow involved” and you did what Mike does..
    nice going Mikey.

I defer to your expertise buddy. The seller is not a very experienced guitarist or gear aficionado like our crowd is.
He IS a really great guy gong to bat for his sister..

The only niggle I can see on the entire guitar is a small scratch near the upper bout F hole on the bottom lobe... You have to really look to feel it, it was fully disclosed in the ad and to me in great detail by the seller.

I'm sure Hammer is right but it is a magnificent guitar. And yeah the old Boy Scout coming to the rescue. In this case though this guitar is just A-MAZING... I think I'm gonna get Phil to set it up with TI Jazz Swing flats and GET RID of that PITA volume knob and hid a Schatten under the guard. The neck is real easy to play. One sexy little touch on this is at the 12th fret, the side markers are the brightest abalone (or maybe OPAL) they just wink at you !!!

And first opportunity I get I'll get really good shots of the whole body in nice light. It truly is Class A stuff... The KIND as the surfers would sayin Malibu.

.I shot these and did not dumb them down. I want you to see the remarkable detail. Heck the side woods are off the charts trippy,

The seller probably thought that the first two digits refered to the year, and the condition of the guitar certainly doesn't reveal its age. My guess is that most Campellone owners take good care of their guitars.
No big deal. I'd be just as happy with a 19 year old Campellone as with a two-year-old Campellone.

Bigmike you made a guitar day for everyone! Truly a magnificent guitar we have get together and compare guitars as my 18 inch Campy is amazing. Mark builds a fine guitar that is accessible to most mortals in cost. I believe he is the most underrated build because he has the most humble approach. I am going to PM here as you mentioned Holy Week deacon deep in liturgy guitar set aside for sure.

?I was up late last night playing this. It rings like a piano. I got some pretty swell guitars but doggone this beast is truly amazing. I told the kid I got it from, tell your sister I'm gonna be the best caretaker of your husband's guitar.

I'm gonna have a Schatten volume pot mounted under the pick guard and leave it looking stock, the material of the pickguard is very attractive.

Mark Campellone has continued to build traditional Archtops that are reminiscent of the best advanced post war Gibson L7/L5 guitars. That was always his goal - and he does it better than anyone. Fit and finish is always impeccable - and his build process Is consistent and always on schedule .

Mark never made these guitars heavier like Gibson did through-out the past several decades, so in essence he is the builder of choice for those wanting a “new” post war Gibson sound- which is more acoustically pleasing then the recent Gibson offerings of this design- and certainly less expensive.

Used Campellone’s are a smart buy- I’ve owned several and all were excellent.

BigMike- sounds like you scored a really great one - do enjoy.

QA, great post. The one thing to note, he is very versatile builder so he is capable of building a guitar to the specs ordered by the customer. Vinny wanted a thicker top and stronger bracing, reminiscent of his D'AQuisto and Mark made him a guitar that he feels is on a par with the very best he has ever owned.

Mike, there is no doubt that you did great. Also no doubt that you have THE guitar that is front and center in Campellones gallery. That says something.

I wonder how this guitar compares to your Citation. To me, they are very similar because it looks like it has virtually the same wood. What a gorgeous guitar. Amazing. You did good.

Mike welcome to the Campellone club. Mark is by far one of the best archtop builders past and present. Mine was $8K new and worth twice that IMO. GLORIOUS tone and the fit and finish kicks sand in a L5’s face.
What a beautiful axe Mike. The SPECIAL is rightly named.

Mark C. is a total class act. His whole operation is also. His shop is cleaner than a hospital surgery room. He told me he was very anal. My kind of guy. All my Gibson’s are top shelf quality but you will find a flaw on all of them. Not my Campy. Absolute flawless build. I got mine new last August. It is really opening up. Total lap piano cannon. I play it unplugged with flat wounds and my wife tells me to turn down my amp. Super nice guy too and as Steve says always on a promised schedule. If he says August that is when you will have it. He is my age so don’t wait if you want one.

So it got ran sunny, but it's so windy. So I ran out there and shot these, winds of over 25 mph had me pretty scared. And the sun shined right in my eyes which made may aiming and framing of the shots less than perfect. Like an opal in the sun it really shines far better in the natural light.
