Probably a dumb question, but will proceed anyway. I wanted to try heavier E and B strings on my Guild X-700 (which is currently strung with D'Adarrio Chromes) and was curious to know to know if they can be replaced by any old brand since those strings are obviously not wound? Where do you folks order individual string replacements from?
Thanks in advance!

I regularly do this for not only string tension, but even volume as well.
I use ti flats, and pyramid rounds, and will get from the same brand.
I think I use strings by mail? Whoever sells TI singles. Hope that helps.

I use 014 and 018 on a regular set of round 12s. Any brand will do, just choose the cheapest.

all plain strings are essentially the same....they are just carbon/swedish steel core..no wrap...
most have a thin tin plating and a few others brass...but really makes no audible difference as the plating is microscopically thin
d'addario makes some great strings..and they have plain string 5 packs available...i've always kept a wide range of gauges around...invaluable!

cheers

Thanks so much, guys. Answers everything I think I need. I appreciate it.

Rogue plain strings from MF are $2.30 per dozen. Just Strings bulk pack plains are $2.90 per dozen. I use the ones from Just Strings just because I was ordering a box of strings from them. They are good.

Note to self; When you meet Jorge, smile and say hello, but don't shake his hand.

Ah ah, I'm actually not strong at all, you can shake my hand without being afraid of injury. It's just that my guitar is very comfortable, people who play it think it's 011s or something like that. And I like to pick hard and I don't remember the last time I did a bend, so... Martino uses 15s or something crazy like that and doesn't seem very strong either (not comparing my self to him in any way, just helping my point).

Right now I have 12-52 chromes on my favorite electric archtop because I have a few sets lying around I may just as well use up. But normally I use something in the 14-56 ballpark. With the action adjusted appropriately, the 14-56 set doesn't feel significanly stiffer. However, bending is a different matter. Try bending an 18 B string a major third and you'll likely get blood on your guitar.

Well I had a set of .13 Chromes that I never opened, so I cracked em and swapped the B and E out on the Guild. I didn't think it would be that much of a difference but it really was. Goodness. I play with my thumb and always got a thin sound from those 2 strings. Anyway, it feels like the sit a little higher even though they fit in the nut ok. Maybe I actually have a little feel and notice just the slight change from playing with other strings.
Thanks for all the help!
