He definitely uses cool rails. I asked him about it in person. He used EMGs for awhile (those were the black pickups he used.) but the white rail pickups are Duncan cool rails.

Why did he choose this guitar, instead of a telly or an archtop?

How is the action on his guitar?
And by the way:
Great photos, David!

Hi, David.
First, sorry I’m slow to respond. I’m not much a forum guy and I must have not set up my thing here to get notified about replies.
I think I stumbled across Lorne looking into Ed Bickert stuff, probably like others have. But the more I looked and listened the more I wanted to know. So I got obsessed with that roadstar of his and ended up buying two at really cheap prices (all in the 500-700 range depending on condition).Gave one to my nephew who promptly didn’t like it and sold Lornethe best one. Got the one back from my nephew. Needs some work but they are absolutely killer. And I’m a tele guy all day. The neck on the Ibanez is consistent across all of them and is really the best I’ve played even if a tad on the thinner side.
Lorne asked if I was interested in selling it. At first I wasn’t but the more I thought the more I decided he should have it. After all it’s really his guitar. And so I sold it to him for what I paid and we swapped some cash and lessons. I’m so happy he has it.
He’s such a great dude. Best single line player in my mind and his approach to the fretboard is something else. I highly recommend lessons with him and getting his jazz dvd that’s great too.
Long winded but a little more.
Cheers,

Hi there,
I may not be the best for these but here’s what I found out from just talking to Lorne.
I think the action is pretty low but not sure. It was on the one I sold him but he no doubt adjusts to his preference. With those 13s it probably won’t be too high because of the floating trem on the guitar.
While it does float, my guess is that he blocks it. I don’t think he uses the trem at all. I didn’t either.
he has played all sorts I think. If you goggle him an old picture of him
comes up with a les Paul! He just said something about finding that Ibanez in a local shop and played it. Only one he had until he bought the one from me as a backup.
His jazz DVD has him with a tele. My guess is he likes the feel of the neck on the Ibanez and it’s just him in the way that the tele was Ed Bickert.
From my time with him, Lorne is not a gear head at all. He plays what he has and that’s so refreshing. Just that Ibanez and maybe the Yamaha amp or an old Roland orange amp he mentioned.
If you can take some lessons. He’s pure genius.

Guys
I know this is about a year late. I’m super slow and not a forum guy. Plus I never set to get notified. I apologize. I wasn’t ignoring folks. I feel bad but just decided to see if anything new about Lorne was up here and saw the replies.
Thanks for engaging my post. Lorne is the real deal. Hit him up if you can.
Happy New Year to all of you.
Greg
