Then you need a flat ring, not a slanted one. They make those. The geometry of guitar tops varies, some angle one way, some another, and some are flat.

I would probably sand it using the same method as sanding a floating bridge to fit. If it concerned me enough about the Looks. I own a Fender made arch top and it dosent have the problem. and is finished under the neck.
