I agree. I was very surprised by the quality of the Monarch I bought. Plays very nicely.

You can use any of your current guitars if you don't want to spend money. You might not look like a (traditional) jazzer but you can still sound like one with the right EQ settings.

Peerless, D'Angelico, or Used Eastman Heritage.

I've skimmed down the thread, I don't think anyone has mentioned Washburn...I've never played any of their guitars but they're in the budget category.
Regarding the Epi Emperor Regent, I have two. Amplified they sound quite well, but the two are different. One is rounder, wider, terrible through a Fender Frontman, an unlucky circumstance. It is fine through other amps.
The other is brighter, more brilliant. I like both guitars very much, but the bottom line is I think their production runs vary somehow. Try before you buy, get one that sounds well to you.

Just saw that 17" Hofner... I might get one of those myself...

Me too. They are just being introduced here in Australia, I have to wait 3 to 5 weeks before they've got one for me to try out.

I will second the views from the people above on Peerless guitars.
I play the "Manhattan" and "Jazz City" models myself and they are just built so well for their price.
I have played countless of Sub £1000 archtops... Hofner, Epi, Ibanez and the Peerless come out winners all the time for me, but one thing i have learned is that different guitars suit different tasts and styles...Spend time with an instrument you acquire and try not to be too quick to judge a new purchase. Things can change.
You should form an attachment to your guitar/guitars and they will reward you accordingly.
Best of luck.
