I did something that I have not done in ages. Saturday, I gigged with my Ibanez cutaway eloctro-classic. No backup. I enjoyed myself and the audience was enthusiastic.
Ibanez AE 450
It depends on the type of music I’m working on. I split time between my 175 and L5 for jazz, though it’s the 175 more often. I am playing a lot of flamenco, so I’m using my ‘81 Yairi classical for that. It’s maybe my favorite guitar right now. Or, if I’m working on classical tunes or Ralph Towner songs, etc, it’s the Alhambra 9p. I’m also interested in steel string fingerstyle, so it’s my Custom Martin OM-C or my Eastman E6OM. I keep the Eastman tuned to drop D. Ocassionally, it’s the Partcaster or the Republic “Clarksdale” Tricone for blues.
I tend to rotate amongst my collection. I have three guitars out on stands that I am using regularly right now: an Epiphone Triumph, Epiphone Triumph Regent, and a Heritage Eagle. Each has its own personality, so I choose whichever might best satisfy my whims.
This is kind of a cool thread. I split my time between playing an Aztec gold Danocaster "single cut", which is a tele-like guitar, and a sadowsky jim hall.
I am not that interested in collecting or trading guitars and I seem to get a new one every 10 years or so. I've played the sadowsky for 14 years, got the danocaster 3 years ago. before that I played an Ibanez pat metheny for 15 years or so.
For the record, "jazz boxes" are extremely versatile. An ES-175, an L-5CES, an Ibanez GB-10, etc., can be used to make about any music.
I have played Hendrix convincingly on a Heritage Super Eagle. OTOH, I have also played Stella By Starlight and other Great American Songbook charts convincingly on a Stratocaster.
Ted Nugent demonstrated that a Byrdland is a super Hard Rock/Metal instrument. Eldon Shamblin played jazz lines in Western Swing bands for over 50 years on a Stratocaster.
It's all good.
PS: a red Hagstrom I solid body works, too (for Lawson).
Nothing but Teles for most of 50 years. Had a brief fling with a LP back in the late 70's but other than that it's been Teles and now that I make my own I can do them up about any way I want. However, lately, I've been taking a little more notice of PRS.......not sure why but I may have to go to the big box and try one out.
I've been playing my Wu about 95% of the time since I got it. My Benedettos and Eastman are languishing in the closet. Every now and then I pull one of them out, tune it up, and play it for awhile, but not for long.
I rotate and play all mine but when it comes down to it I play the 49 D'angelico or the Hollenbeck the most. They have been with me for 34 and 25 years respectively. I do have to admit about a month ago I was playing my 1979 Barker all the time it felt good. It was my first real carved top jazz guitar bought it when I was 17 years old senior in high school in 1979.
Martin 0000-1 from 1997... one of 370 made between 1997 and 2000
Martin 00-18v from 2015... highly flamed mahogany backs and sides.. a rarity
Carlos Pina flamenco.
Fender Hiway 1, 2003.. Highly modded, Bill Lawrence Keystone pickups (made by Bill) , Vintage tuners and string tree, other goodies.
At 75 I'm still learning. My 70's era made in Japan Ventura flat-top has been with me a long time. But now also have a Peerless New York arch-top and a 90's era Guild D35 arch-back.
Normally I try to alternate between most of my guitars, except some that I only keep for gigging and rarely play. But during vacation and summer months, where it gets hot and humid here, I tend to practice on the tele a lot more, playing mostly unplugged. Especially now that the nitro finish has passed the point of no return you just pick it up and play..
Epiphone Casino. A 1961 Re-Issue model, seems like it was made for me! Actually, it found me..... when I wasn't even looking to buy. Used at GC. and nicely priced while being absolutely perfect in playability and tone.
It varies, but out of my 10 guitars, at the moment I play my Ibanez 2619 Artist prestige most, followed by the 1961 ES-175D, then a Custom Shop 1961 stratocaster..... but there are phases - a few months ago the Gretsch 5220g Jet got a lot of attention, as did a 1978 Ibanez Musician MC400NT....
As I stated earlier my main gigging guitar is a Yamaha SA2200.
Well this thread is an oldie so in the meantime I purchased a used (but in mint condition) Ibanez AGS for every day practice and work on my music.
I gave it new hardware in gold, bridge and tailpiece from Gotoh, a pair of Super 58s I had sitting on a shelf, new tuners. Basically I had all parts from earlier projects except the pick guard bracket which I had to buy.
The AGS is smaller and weighs significantly less than the Yamaha so it's way easier to pick it up and set it down again. With the improvements it is now an amazingly good sounding, very resonant guitar, especially at this price point. And you can even play unplugged when practicing - comes handy at 3am..
And as - thanks to some virus - there are no gigs anyway, this is my most played guitar at this moment.
Well I was gunna say I used it all the time in my old solo arrangements on youtube...but I didn't see any lol. example could be

Neither of the TC heads has reverb, and I don't have a reverb pedal. I don't really miss it, although I use a little through amps that have it. I grew up without reverb. My first big amp was a...

Nice playing. It would be interesting to hear you do your thing on a Gibson with flatwounds through a Polytone or Henriksen. Somehow, I think it would still sound like you.
I agree there’s many sounds possible with these instruments. I don’t know what’s normal anymore. It’s been a long time since I played Gibson with flatwounds thru a polytone.:)
Anyway, i should...
