Tony was one of two guitar players (The other being Al Caiola) that did an album of great American Songbook tunes with Johnny Mathis in 1959. The understated, melodic playing of these two master guitarists on that album should be a study for all jazz guitarists (most of whom, myself included tend to overplay at times).

Man, that's some tasty guitar on the Mathis album. Of modern day guitarists, that sublime restraint reminds me of Gray Sargent, who plays with Tony Bennett. That's how to comp a vocalist!
