I finally listen to the video of Rich and I find the guitar is a bit too bright sounding. That could be the amp and they way it is set up but actually not my favorite tone.

Gibson installed them one way. Later, Heritage installed them the other way. In the late-70s I recall them backwards from the way you see them now (i.e., the Heritage way).
Danny W. is right...you can put them any way you want.

Fair enough. I am sure Johnny Smith had some sophisticated rationale for it. The point about the bass string is why I also like mine that way (mine came like that from Max405 too). However, it was a problem on my Epiphone Regent: many bass strings fell short.

I like your aesthetics based approach Max405, I am sure Johnny Smith would have approved it as it seems he was no less anal than you. I am really enjoying the HJS with the TI Swings to my own surprise and to the extent I bought many sets of it in the 20% off sale. So many rounds of red garlands on the headstock to come !

The guitar I kept the longest was that 1977 Byrdland. 30 years. The following year I traded the Super V for a 1978 Super 400 which to this day regret offing that one. That 1978 S400 was really special.
