I finally listen to the video of Rich and I find the guitar is a bit too bright sounding. That could be the amp and they way it is set up but actually not my favorite tone.

P.S.: They can be installed any way you like. They were probably like that when I got them. Look at reply #10--the two Johnnys are reversed also. I prefer the short finger on the bass side, because the sixth string can be wound around the tuning peg post just a couple of turns, but it doesn't really matter.

Gibson installed them one way. Later, Heritage installed them the other way. In the late-70s I recall them backwards from the way you see them now (i.e., the Heritage way).

Danny W. is right...you can put them any way you want.

Fair enough. I am sure Johnny Smith had some sophisticated rationale for it. The point about the bass string is why I also like mine that way (mine came like that from Max405 too). However, it was a problem on my Epiphone Regent: many bass strings fell short.

    MB, How are you buddy?
If the long fingers were holding the E & A strings, You wouldn't be able to wind the Red, Green or Light Blue Silk wrappings on TI strings on the tuner post. In fact, the Low E string would have no wrapping left on the string at all. I like the silk wrapping on the string south of the tuner pole when its wound so they all look cool and the same. But I am anal like that..
Johnny had the Fingers on his guitar the same way we do. So we are safe..

I like your aesthetics based approach Max405, I am sure Johnny Smith would have approved it as it seems he was no less anal than you. I am really enjoying the HJS with the TI Swings to my own surprise and to the extent I bought many sets of it in the 20% off sale. So many rounds of red garlands on the headstock to come !

Mine in 1980. Note the GB20 behind me. That was a really great guitar. Ever bit as good as the Super V.
Mine said Super 500 in the F hole.

I am counting only eight guitars in that picture

Now the big question, is any of them still in your possession ?

The years have not been kind. You should see me now. The guitar I kept the longest was that 1977 Byrdland. 30 years. The following year I traded the Super V for a 1978 Super 400 which to this day regret offing that one. That 1978 S400 was really special.
