Please understand that I'm new to a floating bridge guitar. I know it looks out in the photo, but according to the electronic tuner, the notes are exactly the same with the open strings as they are at the 12th. So, I'm assuming that Wolfe set it up correctly. If there is any better way to check, please let me know.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Heritage does a burst as good as or better than ANYBODY.

Hey all. I have the chance to try one of these, a one pickup H575 with spruce top, Charlie Christian p/u. Bit of a drive, so I'm still in the thinking stage. Anyone here have experience with such a guitar, they'd care to share? thanks.

Well, that sounds like a VERY cool guitar.
575's are great guitars. One with a spruce top an CC pickup would have been a custom order...if the price is good, definitely worth the gas $ to check it out.
-
That would be a guitar that I would be quite interested in, actually. As Jeff says, the 575 is an excellent guitar. Add a CC pickup and you have a jazz beast.
-
I vote for. Actually I vote for twice. A CC PU will magnify any guitar of character. Just think about how it turned a cheap Gibson L50 into a mythic ES 150 80 years ago !! Nice association you have here I think. Any clue on where the CC comes from ? Which PU winder ?
-
Is it a real Charlie Christian pickup. Seems, these days any single-coil blade pickup with a hexagonal overlay is called CC pickup. Likewise I suspect any archtop guitar with 'f' holes could be called an ES-150.
-
As to the pickup ... the seller is not sure, suspects it's from Lollar. Could also be CC from the UK I suppose. The guitar was custom ordered that way. It's installed with the three bolts through the top. Not in a HB route.

A Lollar 3-point mount CC Blade has a transparent acrylic plate. Take a small inspection mirror, stick it through f-hole, and take a peek.
Seymour Duncan makes them the traditional way as does CCUK.
Sounds promising with a spruce top.
I like any archtop with a 3-point mount CC blade pickup.Last edited by Jabberwocky; 01-17-2017 at 02:55 PM.

OK, I'll admit it. I've been toiling at guitar playing since the '60's and have never personally played an archtop with a CC p'up. I know, I know...My loss! I've heard it on old records, tapes and CD's, but ain't nothing like the 'real thing' for a true assessment.
So, how would one describe the tone compared to a P90 or PAF?
Maybe then I can get all GASSY like some of you guys sound regarding this mystery H575 CC.
-
Take a CC pu, put it under water in a swimming pool, and play it, and it will kind of sound like a humbucker.
Seriously, to my ear, the CC will have more sparkle to the top end, be much less mid-rangey, and will have greater dynamic (volume) sensitivity.
I think P90's sound a little darker than the CC. Kind of blues-ier throughout the entire range, with less upper chime.
-
It's not un-P-90 like...but not as "mid focused." Which is a bad way to describe it, because it has great mids...
Ok, so we've accepted "thunk" as a somewhat agreed upon guitar tone onomatopoeia, right? So Charlie Christian pickups "ding."
They can be a little noisy. Through a tube amp, close your eyes, and you'll time travel.
-
Perhaps this is the guitar the OP mentioned. This thread went quite quick, but the I was curious what this custom one-off looked like...

Steve:
Yes, that's the one. I went quiet on this due to an agony of indecision. An inner struggle. On one side, an intense curiosity about single coil pickup sounds in jazz, and great appreciation for those sounds. On the other, practical matters. Such as, I already own a very fine Heritage H575 (blueburst if you can imagine, quite attractive in person), off with my luthier buddy getting my favorite p/us swapped in for the stock ones. Such as, maybe I should just play the cool guitars I already have ...
You know, the usual angst. For the life of me, I just can't decide whether to take the drive up there.

Took possession of this lovely guitar last week and I am super impressed. I thought I would post here to share my excitement because no one in my home could care less! They dont even want to sit and stare at it saying how beautiful it is and they look at me oddly when I do this, weirdo's

Great guitars. Might be a long lost cousin of mine, Antique Sunburst?
What kind of pickups are in there? No covers? Can't tell from photo.
-
Yes it is antique sunburst. The pickups are plain black and from the little i could find out im pretty sure they are the original shaller pickups that Heritage used around the time the guitar was made, 1988.

Very nice guitar, I'm a big Heritage nut so congrats.
As for no one at home liking the guitar, heck my cats only liked the guitar when they could climb in the open case and sleep in it. LOL

Yes, they are Schaller Golden 50 pickups. My H575 was made in 1989 and was fitted with those.
I've had mine since 1991 and it takes a post like yours to make me look at it again with a renewed admiration for the ASB finish, and of course the beauty of the headstock.
Congratulations on the NGD.

That's a beautiful instrument. And it's a pity that so many people fail to grasp meditative joy of the "sit and stare at it" phase of Advanced Guitar Appreciation. I mean, what else can you do when you've practiced so much your fingers are sore or it's too late to plug in? Congratulations, and play it in good health!

I don't know who the genius is behind their aesthetics in that venerable institution, but to me they make some of the most beautiful archtops on the planet, above many Gibsons, Guilds and boutiques, with the possible exception of old D'Angelicos. Never gaudy, never bland, never looking like a piece of collector furniture. I'd like to have one, or two, some day. Your family may not be noticing it yet. Once I was tempted to swap my archtop for another one, and my wife said don't you ever do that, I love that guitar and every time I see it I think it's a guardian angel in our home (!) She'd never expressed anything but indifference for it before.

Yep, pay no heed to those who don't appreciate its subtle beauty OR to suggestions about swapping out those excellent Schaller pickups

Maybe lose the roller saddles (?) though....
Lovely guitar.
-
i did not know the saddles could be a problem. I have had a quick google search and there does indeed seem to be a lot of people that don't like the bridge. I have had no problems up to now but will be keeping an ear out for any.

I probably would not have switched, but have a Gibson SG in which I had put really nice humbuckers - a set of Ian Anderson standard winds. I'll be selling the SG, so was having the stock p/us put back in, leaving a really nice set of HBs up for grabs.
Anyway, the results are quite interesting. These IA pickups are (I suspect) a bit lower wind than the Schallers. Not quite as loud at the same volume settings. On neck p/u: A bit less in the mids at lower volumes; the sound is clearer, more detailed somehow. At mid volumes, the bass stays tighter. The Schallers got a little boomy as volume went up. These stay pretty even. Turning up higher, there's a warm sort of edge coming on the IAs. Tastier than what I heard from the Schallers.
The bridge p/u is very different overall. A real resonant twang from the IA bridge, where the Schaller didn't twang much. Not as obvious at lower volumes. Easy to hear as volume comes up. Gets a beautiful, hot kind of drive at higher volume.
So with the new p/us, the middle and bridge positions are more useful. Not that I'm actually using them now, for jazz practice. Makes me think I should get a set of Doug's plugs and try this guitar for some blues and roots stuff.
The Schallers sounded good. These HBs are better. As always, YMMV.
