Looks the biz.

Looks great! Is the tailpiece one of those cheap ebay ones?
-
Beautiful! Please describe the neck; overall feel, fretboard radius ( old school or flatter ?), skinny frets ?
-
That's beautiful. I'd love to hear that minihum.

...The 'gold' tailpiece was purchased from eBay (Chinese I presume ?) It's very nice, well made and strong.
Available in Chrome as well.....both good value I think...
The neck is pretty medium/slim with a nicely rounded profile and not a lot of thickening / tapering as it gets towards the body join..so it's nice to play all the way up... Action is really nice and low with 12's flatwound strings.
The tone is on the soft / mellow side but nicely balanced throught the bass end to the top strings. Loud enough to be played acoustically with good volume. The electrics give that 'earthy' jazzy sound that we all seem to go for.
I'm well pleased for what I originally payed for it...

Congratulations, it's a nice looking instrument.
Is it all laminate, or does it have some solid wood? If so, carved or pressed?
-
That's a nice guitar. Tokai has turned out some desirable archtops, IMO.
-
....not sure if it's a laminate or what ? How do you check that ??
The thing I really like about this guitar is that it's got a 24.75" scale neck rather than the usual 25.5" of most 'big' guitars.....
Suits me fine as I've got fairly short fingers....makes a lot of difference on those 'stretchy' chords...
-
You check for laminations in the top by lifting out the pickup and examining the edges of the top where the pickup goes in.
FWIW, a laminated top is no drawback. I have hand-carved, solid wood archtops and laminated wood archtops. I like the sound of both. The carved-body, L-5 style archtop is great for getting the 60s Wes Montgomery sound. The laminated-body archtop is great for getting the Tal Farlow/Barney Kessel/Jimmy Raney bebop sound of the 50s.

Short scale length, 17" body, set in pickup, lovely warm color. My full wish list...

Enjoy!

I had a Tokai 335-type guitar in the 1980s, which I used for several years. It was well made, comfortable to play and sounded pretty much indistinguishable from the Gibson 335 owned by a friend of mine. He ended up selling his for a Tokai Strat, and used the spare cash to buy a Mesa Boogie amp.
-
..what do you guys think this is worth.....? I love it but 'might' put it towards a 'real' Gibson.....
-
Is it an old lawsuit era...70's maybe? The headstock looks close to a Gibson shape. Reminds me of some of the other older MIJ examples from various brands before they had to reshape the headstocks. Looks great from here, enjoy.

Mine, it's like yours. Laminated tops. I changed the PU for a Gibson. I paid $400 for it. A low budget but great sounding guitar, perfect for wild jam sessions. It does not sound as good as a Gibson, but has the same conford playing. One of my easiest guitars to play.

Some sound check of my JS 70 Tokai

I love Tokai's high end stuff, and have never seen these before. They look like a lot of fun!
