My friend growing up Joey B. had a Pacifica 112 that he swore by.
It was Blue. And yes, I remember the neck was insanely flat and playable anywhere.

I also have a pawn shop Yamaha AEX-502 semi hollow in bright orange with a very playable neck. Super flat neck and very jazzbox-ish feel (body joins neck at 15th fret instead of the more common 17th on semi-hollows).

+1 Big Mike on the 17" Unity neck. Mine is the best I've played.

My '52 Les Paul has the perfect neck, a nice medium-thick "C" contour. It's what a vintage Gibson should be.

Archtops: both my Andersens have great medium necks with very comfortable profile. I don't really like big "shoulders" on a neck.

For archtop it's my Gibson L7C that Kalamazoo gave a distinct asymmetrical carve, and custom ebony fretboard. It feels perfect and makes an articulate acoustic sound. I'm going to say the neck shape is one big part of what's "best" but the responsiveness, texture/feel in hand are also important. For the guys that have complaints about lacquer feeling sticky or gummy, in my experience that is what can happen if the lacquer gets some sort of sealer or wax on it too early. The lacquer can't harden as the trapped VOCs are not able to fully leave. Be very careful using any "guitar polish" or other treatments that may seal the finish prematurely. If you have a guitar finish that is already old but has suffered this, strip off the wax completely and see if it begins to slowly improve to the touch.

I know you said "one" but I can't stop
My favorite bolt-on guitar neck is a Warmoth unfinished wenge with ebony fretboard (image below.)
It's not just the shape, the wenge is sooo naturally open (grained) and air cooled it can never get clammy, and that neck also has a great acoustic resonance -- it feels alive. I also have another maker's wenge neck with goncalo alves that is similar.

The neck on my Les Paul Recording is my favourite.

It's pretty thick - not quite as big as a 50's Les Paul neck, but not far off it.
It has 'fretless wonder' frets. Most people from what I've read dislike these frets, but I love them.

I love the little fret nibs, they don't get in the way - not like the huge speed-bump nibs I see on current Gibsons.

Two that feel so good to me on archtops:

    - 2006 or so Heritage H575 Custom. Just as Mr. Beaumont describes, mine is just right hefty and round.
    - 1962 Guild X-50. A bit heftier, and 1 5/8 at the nut.

I tend to like slightly shallower necks on solid bodies and semis. Maybe cause I'm more likely to wrap a thumb over on that type of guitar ... But not thin. In that department, hard to beat the neck feel on my '61 strat. This perfect medium C, takes next to no effort to play.

probably my 70s Aria PE-180, it feels like a late '59 early '60 Gibson, my optimum shape, kind of a Goldilocks shape for me, not too small, not too big, just right.
my 60's Gibsons all have wide nuts but are on the thinner side front to back, very playable for me but not absolutely ideal.

I'm a slim '60s neck fan since I got my 1992 Les Paul Standard.
My Tal is close to perfection with its slim taper neck.
But lately I really fell in love with my Franken Tele Build neck from Warmoth : standard thin profile with a 10-16 compound radius

Love my 60s style tele neck w/9.5 radius, but my Epi Sorrento's 60s slim taper™ profile is one of the best I've ever played.

I don't have any best neck. I feel good with nearly any guitar. Spanish, archtop, solid.... as far as it is well adjusted.

I have a WORST neck. A Suhr Scott Henderson that I had for a couple of months. I hated that neck. That guitar was pure hype in all senses. Sold it fast

+1 on the strat plus, still have my ‘93, easily my best strat neck overall, although the fat and very different neck on my EJ strat is lovely in its own way.
I had a '98 Strat Plus that had a lovely neck. The profile was a hair slimmer than I like, but the neck itself was beautifully constructed and one of the nicest pieces of non-figured maple I've ever seen.

Gibson rounded 50's on my '13 LP Traditional. I like fuller necks but I'm learning that as long as it is C or D shaped (has shoulders) I'm cool with it. If a neck is flat or worse yet V shaped, I loose interest immediately.

    What's the difference between C and D shapes ?

  26. #50

    User Info Menu

think of the letters!..the c shape is a bit "clubbier" as far as wood on back of neck...the d shape is slightly shallower and flatter feeling

many older 50's guitars have the clubby c shape...most modern epis have the d shape

    there's also v shape..but...

    cheers
