CME deal. Couldn’t stand it another day. Vintage Burst. Ordered Saturday, left Chicago Monday, arrived here last night. Fortunately, Monday and Tuesday were not too cold. But, I’m allowing her to acclimate a day before opening the box. The waiting is the hardest part.
. Very hopefull she’s not a dud. Wish me luck! Full rundown coming tonight or tomorrow.

Some people like to hate on the 1959 VOS, but I got mine in-store at CME in March 2016 and I still absolutely love it. Really great playing, solid sounding. It's over a pound lighter than the standard current ES175 model, has a wood bridge, and you can really hear the difference. Not "better" than the current standard model, but different in a way that helps me justify having both!

Another 175 in the Family here... I love it !! Make sure you wait. I opened my box yesterday after about a 1 hour wait and the case was really cold. Glad I waited overnight to horse around with mine... Full pics required when you get at her OR IT DIDN"T HAPPEN !! LOL

Fantastic looking 175. Received my CME ES175 natural about five weeks ago. The last few days it seems like it "loosened up" a bit.

Well, she’s out of the box now and man, she’s a beauty! I can’t find a flaw. It’s near perfect as far as I can tell. Bridge has plenty of room to be adjusted upward or downward (I dislike a saddle that is all the way up). Made with really fine timber—top is super clear without flaws. Back and sides are perfect (there are some reflections in the photos that make it look like funky grain, but it’s real clear and blemish free). Binding is perfect everywhere. No cracks on the fretboard binding (as others have experienced). Great piece of mahogany for the neck—tight, even grain. Fretwork is top notch. The CME folks do a wonderful job inspecting and packing/re-packing. Here we go:
Plays nice and smooth. I’ll spend time with her, getting to know every curve. But, I like her already. A lot. Feeling blessed to have gotten such an exceptional one.

I love mine and it is one of the most inspiring guitars I've ever played. When I pick it up, I just focus and start feeling like Jim Hall... but after a few notes, I am back to reality. but at least the guitar never lets me down! It really has a great sound. I have several comparable guitars to compare it with, all wonderful, but the VOS ES175 has a magic of its own that its detractors just can't seem to feel. That's fine, too, of course. But I totally love mine and I'm celebrating with you about yours!

Thank you! I am looking forward to getting a little bonding time with the new addition over the next week. So glad to hear about the special qualities you enjoy from yours. I now have a natural and this new burst. Although they’re the same model, and only one year apart in build, the blonde has a baseball bat neck whereas the new burst is just a chunky C. What a lovely dilemma! I have the VOS and then a CME deal 2016 ES175 Figured SB. Love them both, and then there's the 90's ES165 Herb Ellis, which is unexpectedly a totally different animal. I didn't know the necks varied so much on these in different years. Originally Posted by rolijen

This is 50% of the source of "Gibson bashing", the other half being all their common, stupid flaws. Gibson has the ability to make GREAT guitars, but they are so inconsistent, one great one, one hack job. Everyone knows they what they're capable of building and that's why folks get so freaking angry when they get one that should never have passed QC.

You're a better man than I, Gunga Din. I opened mine as soon as it arrived. But it had been in mild temps for some time, spent all day in the truck with the weather in the 70s, and a couple of days with temps in the 50s and 60s, so I wasn't worried. Enjoy it.

A real gem. You rolled a 7 ! Very happy for you. When Gibson gets it right nothing comes close......NOTHING.
We all know Gibson can make a great guitar. Sometimes you must step on a few turds to get to the promise land though.

Right! After years of rock and blues, I finally matured enough to appreciate jazz and bought a cheap Aria jazz guitar and started taking lessons from a CIM instructor (a humbling experience). I soon wanted a ‘real’ jazz guitar and bought an ES-165 Herb Ellis. My teacher used to comment every lesson, “that’s the best 175 I’ve ever heard.” Seriously, every time. Regardless, he played a beautiful luthier-built, carved-top and back, amazing in every way archtop (I think the name of the maker was Hopkins?) Well, of course, after a few weeks seeing and hearing his guitar I just had to have a custom-built fancy archtop, so I dropped a boatload of cash on a fancy Palen archtop and sold the Herb Ellis. Big mistake.
While the Palen was a wonderful instrument, I never bonded with it. It got sold the next year. But, I miss that Herb Ellis still. Lawson, you are right, they are a different animal. So much more acoustic than most other 175 style guitars. Mine was really light and played like a dream. If I ever find a single pickup 175 or the early Top-mounted version of the 165 that sounds as good, I’ll jump on it. If you want something in that department that is affordable, find a good used Epiphone Zephyr Regent Reissue. It's like the 90's Herb Ellis/ES165, except about a pound lighter, and the back/sides are mahogany, not maple. It will need a better pickup, but it could fill the "ES175 with one pickup" slot until the real thing comes along. Originally Posted by rolijen
