I mentioned I had ordered one of the CME Gibson Memphis guitar's in another thread and it arrived today. It's one of the 1959 models in VOS natural finish. Beautiful guitar now just need a toothbrush to connect my strap to, I wanted natural to pay homage to early Pat Metheny. Setup is okay, I will take it to my guy and have it setup to my liking.

Thanks to CME I mentioned in my message to them buying it that I like big necks and they selected one with a neck bigger than other '59 reissues I've played. Neck feels great and a buddy of mine played the guitar this afternoon and could not stop talking about the neck. Never had a Gibson with the certificate of authenticity that was cool. So real happy I convinced myself to get one of these deals before they are gone.

    Enjoy!

Over the past few months I decided 16" (or smaller) is the perfect size for me.

In a lot of ways the 175 is pretty close to the sweet spot, although I do wish Gibson would make a single pick-up version again...

I fell in love with one over 40 years ago, how different things would have been it I'd bought that instrument! Oh well...

Sensational guitar. I found my VOS1959 took a little work to find the right tonal "sweet spot" but once I found it, I just grin every time I play it. The lighter weight and the wooden bridge have a kind of bright+dark thing that is fun to work with. Like sweet & sour, salt & pepper. You can push it to a more woody acoustic sound, or dial it back so dark you can smell the cigarette smoke in the bar when you are playing in your own bedroom.

Funny, but my 2016 ES175 Figured Sunburst model sounds very close to my L5ces; but the VOS 1959 is every inch a 175.

Enjoy getting to know this splendid guitar. You have beauty!

Do you know what kind of toothbrush Metheny puts in there? I mean, you gotta get this right!

Hope this helps, circa June 1990, it had a lot more duct tape on the body than you can believe...

Being and old roadie I can testify there is nothing that duct tape can't fix. I even fixed torn shirts with duct tape and years later and many time in the washer and dryer the tape was still holding.

As I said in my first I got the natural finish as a homage to Pat Metheny. For grins I just checked what year Metheny's 175 is, it's a 1959 which is what my new one is a reissue of. Excellent, now if I could only play like Pat.

Congratulations, docbop! That is just luscious. It's hard to believe that a company that can make something so damn iconic and exquisite can be having financial difficulties. But I suppose it happens all the time.

Anyways...I dig the look of the top. Definitely cops that VOS chill. And with a neck like you describe, you are dialed in, my man!

Enjoy that harmonious box of wood!

Beautiful! I love the blonde 175 look. I am very surprised that there is some variation in the neck thicknesses of these and it is not standardized. How does that come about? I thought the CNC machines would spit them out identically. Is the operator tweaking the dials or is there a final dressing stage where some are not sanded down as much?
Enjoy and I agree there should be a 16" blonde thread ('cause I have one).

Actually I'm not a pedal type of person, even in my playing days I used a little as I could get away with. I still have my old T.C. Electronics Chorus+Flanger pedal I used to call my Metheny in a box.

Congrats, doc. I've just swapped one of those for a theorbo, but I did think it was a GREAT jazz guitar. Enjoy.

I read in an interview Pat's guitar was originally a single PUP 175, but he decided all the guitarists he liked had dual PUP guitars so he took the guitar to school and cut the hole for second pup and installed one. The 175 took a beating and he had to retire it while still holding together. In the DVD of Pat and Charlie Haden you can see all of Pat's guitars are have cracks and repairs, Pat is a road dog and his gear gets the worst of it. Even some of the musicians only last a couple years and get tired of all the travel.
