I have an MHS in the neck position of my wine red Tal. It’s fantastic there. I’ve also played them in the newer 1959 reissue 175’s with great results. The MHS are hard to get, but I’ve hoarded a few when I’ve found them for sale. I like them that much.

What's the difference between the 57s and the MHS? (Sound-wise and construction wise?)

I’d be interested to know that too. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen him with 175s in some pics with the original style Van Eps and others with the Gibson style Van Eps with the full truss rod cover like this one.

He had the 1953 and the 1991 Herb Ellis 165 and that was it. He talked about his 53. You can find it on YouTube. The pu, bridge, and of course frets is all he changed on it.
