Hi
So a Gibson '51 Super 300 just showed up locally for sale in what appears to very nice condition . What would you look for specific to the model in terms of possible issues or areas of concern. Couple of pics of the actual local ad. Anything jump out as off?
Just discovered the same images on Reverb - any thoughts?

There are a few main questions: has the headstock been broken? How is the neck-to-body joint? Are there cracks in the body? Is the neck twisted? All of those are fixable and affect value. Everything else is replaceable.
-
Well....
With that pickguard (from a smaller cutaway guitar) it reminds me of a fat man with a short necktie.
But otherwise its quite a looker!

Have a qualified luthier look at it for any structural issues.
-
Do you think that is a replacement pickguard ? - it does seem a bit wrong and something that was bothering me . Most of the Super 300 images I have seen have a longer pickguard probably not a deal breaker but I like to know what I am getting into.

I wanted to buy that last week when it showed up, but seller didnt want to ship....
i had also forwarded it to Hammertone ! Someone should !!

Replacing that too short replacement pickguard (335 model?) for a longer one is dead easy. You can do that yourselve. The tuners do look like replacements as well to me. But both minor aspects (pickguard and tuners) are no issue at all.
Get it fast before someone else does.

Great price on that one provided there are no major structural issues. I paid much much more for mine.
-
Well- I took a look- definately been played a bit but very solid no signs of abuse or immediate issues other than needs a good cleaning but then so do I
The tuners are replacements but older/vintage. Just need to find a good replacement pickguard - anyone have a good source for nice replacements ?
Did I mention this thing sounds gorgeous very full round articulate bass/mid/treble tone that reverberates into your bones with the 80/20 generic strings that are on there right now. The quest begins for the right strings to squeeze everything I can out of this thing.

Well….d'uh.
If you want to play it as an acoustic archtop, then 80/20 or other typical phospor bronze strings are as good as it gets, IMO.
If you want to electrify it with a floating Dearmond, try Monel roundwound strings (Martin "Retro" series) or pure nickel roundwound strings (lots of choices) - these will still give you plenty of acoustic sound.
You need a "long" pickguard. Finding one for an S-300 or S-400 is not easy, but there are plenty available on ebay in the "non-cutaway L-5" style that will fit very nicely.
Here:

Or you could always ask the seller to make you an S-300 guard.
Or ask one of our very own members, fws6, to make you one.Last edited by Hammertone; 03-01-2017 at 11:23 PM.

The guitar looks great, but that short pickguard has to go.

even though they were marketed as the 'poor man's S-400' I seem to see a fair amount of them w/pretty nice maple, some even rivaling or besting some 400's.
ah yes, a Gibson export, this one to the Great White North.
notice the small 'made in usa' stamp in the back of the headstock.
this was before the larger stamp was reintroduced in the 70s on domestic and imports and now is associated by some as an inferior period in the company's history. I've seen a pretty fair number of Gibson exports w/the small stamp, a friend had a nice '28 L-5 that made it's way to Europe and back.

Do you have a link? I can't find it.

It came with a non orginal case that needs to be replaced due to being an ill/barely fit poor condition - any suggestions on finding a case that will get the job done for storing this thing and keeping it humidified properly
thanks in advance

I have a few cases that will fit the guitar. Check your PM.

I believe they made slightly less than 200 of the Super 300 . They were a less well appointed version of a Super 400. Yours is missing the pickguard and a truss rod cover . Looks to be in decent condition. You might want to have a good luthier give it a once over if it hasn't been played in a while. Values seem to be all over the place based on what the seller thinks is " rare " and/or " good condition " .
Here is mine with a repro Chris Mirabella pickguard and a new custom made bridge saddle and a non original case. They are wonderful sounding and playing guitars if you like that big 18" carved archtop sound.
This one is kinda getting toward the high end of asking prices I have seen .
