Check out the Fender 112 Deluxe Plus.

Solid state combo, 94 watts RMS into 1X12 speaker gives plenty of clean headroom.
Overdrive channel is nothing to write home about, but I never use it...
The main channel has full complement of vol/treble/mid/bass. Also has spring reverb....OK if
used sparingly....but the same can be said of many much more expensive amps.

A breeze to move around, weighing in at 33lbs and has a decent sized enclosure with an open back.

I had one years ago and found it to be a good platform for doing big shows....miked up and using
the usual type of pedals to cover whatever the producer wanted to hear.
Let it go in a culling exercise.

It served me very well, so I remembered that recently and kept a look a look out on our local version
    of Ebay.
A few weeks and I picked up one in excellent working order for $200.

Here's the manual which gives you more vital statistics.

Openbacked and under $500? Fender Mustang 3 V2. The MDF cabinet is heavy and sux. Great if you could re-house it yourself in a pine cabinet.

The 65 Twin Reverb or 65 Deluxe Reverb preset with a bit of tweaking in FUSE is all you need. Add a dab of modelled reverb or delay and you are good to go. Deactivate all other effects. Mainly, turn the electronic Volume down to 3 to control hiss and too much modelled signal gain. The factory Vol. presets are all at freaking 7, I swear. The analogue Master Volume is the real volume control.

Before I sold it for beer money, I plugged in my Ibanez SJ500VLS with D'Addario Chrome 12s and instant Kenny Burrell tone. I was surprised! Nice, dark, velvety tones minus that tubey glassy liquid midrange and sense of "air". Actually, I sold it because I hated the Red Tolex that it came in. The guy who bought it loved the Red. I have been looking for it, he tells me. Boy, to think I could have got craft beer instead of Michelob Light if I had known...

The thing gets LOUD. The Celestion 80 does not flub out.

An open-back Polytone BabyBrute is wonderful. Light, small.

    Louder than my first girlfriend.

An open back, lightweight, loud solid state amp that will stay clean-img_5456-jpg

Yamaha G50 112. series i, ii, or iii. Great tone, huge headroom. But 40 pounds. A Eminence Deltalite ii 2512 neo speaker will get it closer to 30 pounds. Very affordable. A much more sophisticated amp than those primitive Polly Tones Lawson likes.

Roland Blues Cube 30 Hot for $500 new. It has plenty volume and is clean, open-backed, with 30 watts and a 12" speaker. I have a Henriksen 112ER and it compares favorably, with the Blues Cube having more of a tube sound and feel using their Tube Logic technology.

Definitely a nice amp. Joshua Breakstone uses that, I think.

I have the big G100 210. Great sound, but murder to carry around! Plus, all these older amps lack a few amenities we've all come to appreciate, like an auxiliary line in and effects loop.

Nothing a trip to the tech couldn't add. I have a series i g100 115 with the high end speaker which is like having a ev or jbl, it won't distort and can run with my twin, very hi fidelity. My g50 210 and friends 112 do get to the point of cone breakup at impossible levels but they sound nice doing it. With something like the neo they'd go clean all the way like the 115.

I can't answer your question but I'd like to ask how you like the VSA 35? I'm looking at one right now and am wondering how much clean headroom does it have? I need it to compete on stage with a Vibrolux Reverb that's running a solid state rectifier and some fairly efficient speakers. I can always run it in conjunction with an EV-15 SRO speaker that I have but that thing is so heavy I might as well just bring two amps.

Have you checked the Henriksen Alfresco? Open back, flat preamp, good reverb and a guitar speaker instead of the usual bass pa speaker of choice. Put a Barb EQ in front of that and it should be very fendery.

I just used mine Sunday w/ my Elferink Tonemaster Carved 16.5 " archtop playing in a large room! Couldn't be happier w/ my choice, and believe me I've been through way too many over the years!

A Fender Quad Reverb, oh wait sorry 3 out of 5 isn't what you're looking for. Steve Howe toured with Quads and Twins, a roadie who is a tech fixes a LOT of issues :-)

Award Session Blues Baby 45 (I have the Blues Baby 22, but that only works with quiet drummers)

i was aiming at one of these but then a little Princeton Reverb FSR stole my heart..
But the alfresco is still on my list. I'd love to hear one.

They seem great - like they corrected everything I didn't like on the original Henriksen If I hadn't gone the modelling route I would be for sure looking for one of these!

I would add a Koch Jupiter to the list of amps to check out. Great sounding amp which works really well with archtops (I've played it extensively with a Hofner New Prez). Very reasonably priced, fairly lightweight and plenty loud for most situations.
