    Hey guys,
The 175 made it in one piece. It was a mess though. I did a full out detail. Didn't have to remove the pickups. Baby glistens now! I'll tell you, Wine Red is the coolest color on a flamey guitar.
I have not really played it. I just wanted to get some pics up for my bros.

Very sweet Max405! You've spoken a lot about your love for the 175. Now you've got another. Is there another video in the making? I hope! AG

    Definitely!
I'll be more than happy to do something. But I won't just throw some thing together. I want it to be nice.
    Let me work on it.
    thanks, Joe D

    Max405,
Awesome ! I was never a fan of red colored guitars - but that's strikingly beautiful with the hardware. Seems like you have the perfect Gibson pair for your style of playing . Do enjoy my friend.

That's not your typical red guitar. You just gotta love that deep wine red. I had an Ibanez L5 that color and I regret selling it. Enjoy. I'll bet it sounds great.

Wine Red and Gold and Aged White binding. Now, that's tony!

Play the hell out of it, Sloppy J...Max!

I'm gonna try! I was hoping the guitar was less than perfect, believe it or not. This way I wouldn't worry so much about adding my own little imperfections here and there.. Well, after a 3 hour detail, I got it looking pretty nice and now, I don't want to mess it up! Thanks C74.

I think a Wine Red guitar with gold parts is the most elegant look out there. Rita hangs on my wall, with Tal to her left all debonair, like Fred Astaire..

Believe it or not, Years ago I saw a Les Paul Custom in Wine Red and gold. I thought it was the most beautiful thing ever. I've wanted that color combo ever since. Now that color combo doesn't work on everything. But the perfectly balanced and symmetrical styling of the 175 wears the scheme very well.

GN, I am very proud to have the icon once again. The working mans Jazz guitar. Playing it brings back my childhood. Coming home from my paper route, I'd see my fathers White Ford Falcon not parked in its usual spot. So I'd rush upstairs, grab my MelBay book, slide his 175 out from under his bed and git to Practicing! The feel of a 175 makes all those old memories rush back into my soul. Thankfully, this one doesn't have those old early 1950's skinny frets on it..

    Thanks everyone.

Sweet ! Amber or gold knobs really look sweet with the wine/gold combo. Something to think about. Nice little $20 upgrade.

Also a tech tip. If you ever need to touch up the black paint used on the F- holes, Testors flat black oil base model paint is a spot on match. $5 at Amazon for a little bottle. Nice axe bro.

    Hey,
I have a set of those knobs. I have cream pickup rings too, I was thinking... And I have a Big Black Sharpie that will do the trick.. I didn't have one at home.. I worked on this guitar for 3 hours last night. I am not surprised you noticed that. The only thing I didn't fix. You are the Elexagente' of guitars...

Big black sharpie is a big mistake. Totally different color black. The touch up will look awful. Also the sharpie ink can bleed into the lacquer as the oil base paint won't.

I don't own a single wine red Gibson, but strangely enough I think it's probably my favorite look for most Gibson guitars. I had a cherry red 335 for a while, but that's the closest I've come. Absolutely beautiful guitar, JD!

    Congrats Max405!

I have come to appreciate my wine red L-5 Wesmo. A 175 is a great tool for jazz. Gibson's rule!

99.9% of the time you make my life easy. Why couldn't you just say, "OK, that'll work.."?
Now I have to buy friggin model paint because I'll never hear the end of it if I use the Sharpie..
    Damn..

Almost everyone loves the Wine Red. Yet, the Wine Red along with Black have the lowest resale value. Hey I don't care, It worked out for me.
    Thanks Rhythm Man.

The Wine red Wes Montgomery L5 was what I really wanted. When Vinnie got one, I almost pee'd in my pants it was so nice. Some day..

I keep telling myself, You don't need 2 Johnny's.. Then I keep telling myself, you absolutely need 2 Johnny's. I guess this is why it really never ends. Lucky for me..

SS, when I buy a 175 or even an L5, I feel like what Damone said in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.. "Where Ever you are, that's the place to be.." Its just right. The originals. The benchmark. There is nothing above it or even on the sides of it. Everything else is under it. That's how I feel.

Thanks Buddy. I cant wait to hear me play it too.. I detailed it for 3 hours after diner last night and then went to bed. I just found out that I have to pickup, Drop-off, and cook for 4 of my sons friends tonight after work. So maybe I'll really get to dig into it tomorrow. That's OK. I'd rather be Joeys Dad, than a spoiled Guitar player anyway..

I have said, numerous times that I learned how to play guitar on my fathers ES175d.

After playing my new to me 175 for about 20 minutes, the magic comes back, in overwhelming waves. My hands adapt to the guitar and I feel like there is nothing I can't play on it. The geometry of a 175 is so naturally perfect for me. It's scary.
The scale is perfect. The full neck is perfect. I don't need to look down at the guitar when I'm playing it because everything is exactly where I expect it be. Upper fret access on a 175 is superior to any Venetian cutaway.

You know, this use to happen with my 07 175 (Rick S has it now) and my 165 (Lawson has it).

Now this is no great revelation. But it is cool that it happens.

Beatiful guitar. Can I ask you what the neck is like? I have a 2006 175 with P-90s and the neck is huge. I've been looking for a humbucker 175 with as big a neck and haven't found it yet. I was wondering if I should be looking at that particular year.

I had a 2004 ES 175D and it had the huge neck. I have a friend who has the 2006 with P90's. His has the same huge neck as my 2004 did, and that guitar, like most modern 175's had humbuckers.

I am betting Max405's guitar has the huge neck too...

Thanks buddy. The neck is full. Its not that bad though. I've got little hands and I get around just fine on it. I need to adjust my hand position a little because I tend to pull downward the high E and I am getting buzz on some key frets (6-11). Its not action related. Its fret edge related. Rather then push straight into the fret I tend to roll my hand downward. Its a technique issue that I will correct in short order.

SS, I think this 175 is pretty consistant with the other 175's I've played. They are all nice and full to me. I guess its just my taste. As you know, I couldn't get along with the JP-20, GB-10 or even the HDA neck. I prefer the L5, 175 neck.
The only Gibson that I've ever played that I thought the neck might have been too big was on a Gibson ES137. I am guessing it was maybe a 2014?? It was new in Sam Ash and my buddy who works there told me to try it. It was chunky. The 1st thing I thought was when Johnny Smith said a D'A that he played one time had a "neck like a plow handle".
The neck on my 175 is very comfortable. I think because that's what I am accustomed to..

I had a 175 that had a neck like a baseball bat and some that were thin so their neck dimensions have been all over the map over the years. My current 175 is a custom made from the Crimson Custom shop. It is identical to my L4's neck. Both signed by the same builder. A soft C almost D neck. Very comfy, actually perfect for me. Not fat and not thin. A perfect medium neck profile.
They not only vary year to year but also guitar to guitar. The necks are still hand rolled. I think who ever is building the guitar makes it comfy to his or her personal hand. They roll the necks till they feel comfy to them. You have big hand, medium hand, and small hand guitar builders. Just my reasoning on the matter as neck dimensions have always varied.
